Now, let me repeat that word - SOLO. I know we have no shortage of rock bands out there, but checking my iPod made me realise how much things have changed in the popular music scene.
There used to be a time where I had NO female recording artists in my music collection, and it used to be something I felt quite guilty about, but there was just no music being made by girls that really did anything for me. Hell, when I bought the Jagged Little Pill album I felt like I had burned a bra or something.
Nowadays, though, my iPod is crammed with girls. Britney, Gaga, Little Boots, Ke$ha, Hole, Marina and the Diamonds.. the list goes on. Basically, pop music right now is swamped with girls making catchy, enjoyable, innovative tunes.
So where are the guys? Now, I'm not talking r&b or hip hop, I'm talking music that guys like Prince, MJ, Beck and George Michael brought out. Obviously Prince and GM are still around (and if the news is to be believed, MJ's back catalogue will continue to be recycled for the 12 people who don't own Thriller or Billie Jean yet), but where are the NEW male solo acts?
Answer - they pretty much don't exist. And I really don't know why. If they're not part of a band or into rap or r&b, male solo acts are nowhere to be found, unless you count some wannabe idiots from Cowell's camp (and I don't).
So where's the NEW Prince? The NEW MJ? Because, let's face it, the only male solo act making waves is this guy..
And whilst I've got nothing against JT per se, surely we can do better than that, or at least find an alternative? Suddenly the days where albums like Sign o The Times and Bad are released in the same year seem a long, long way away.
