With the abundance of comic book movies we've seen lately, very few have had notable rock/pop stars lending thier names and tunes to the official soundtrack. Whilst the likes of Kick Ass have great soundtracks, there's no distinctive lead single that makes you think of the movie when you hear it. And no, Sabbath's Iron Man doesn't count. And the only one I can think of is the Watchmen's truely dire Dylan cover by My Chemical Romance. But the least said about that the better.
And when you really think about it - ho boy, there's not an awful lot of good ones to choose from, is there? Even Spider-Man got lumped with that dick from fucking Nickelback for the soundtrack single.
And so I had to inevitably conclude that - sigh - Batdance really IS the best lead single from a comic book movie. Now, biased as I am, even I know Batdance isn't exactly Prince's best work. Although, to be fair, it's an adventerous, bold choice of song, far removed from the lumpen, tedious power ballads we get nowadays (Snow Patrol for Spider-Man 2? Really?) I can only imagine the studio bosses at Warner Bros when they first heard it, though. "So... we're trying to distance ourselves from the campy 60s Batman, and we've financed a song that has "Batmaaaaaaan" repeated all the way through it. Awesome."
I dunno if you've seen this (and I'm amazed it's still on Youtube given the artist in question), but this is the follow up (and superior) single from the Batman album, Partyman. I had never actually seen this video until about a month ago. It's hilariously naff, but Prince.. oh man. Straight as I am.. he looks fucking amazing in this!

Sorry, did I say Batdance was the best lead single from a comic book soundtrack? Well, I DID think that when I originally went to write this, until I thought of the CLEAR winner. Of course!
Have you got it yet?
Dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun
I don't know why I didn't think of it before, the obvious choice.
So am I right, though? Are there really so little quality comic book movie soundtracks? Or have I just got some kind of memory loss? Can YOU think of any?
(Unless you count this one)
