You know what I like better than hearing about a new Marvel movie?
Hearing about LOTS of new Marvel movies.
Yes, there's a growing feeling that enough is enough blah blah but you know what? Keep the quality up, keep the 2 disc DVD's coming and there can NEVER be enough. Especially with titles like these...
The Avengers movie!
Marvel Studios today announced good news for all Marvel comic fans, with an Avengers movie on the drawing boards. To be penned by Zak Penn who wrote the upcoming The Incredible Hulk, the Avengers live-action movie will be titled, originally, The Avengers. This comes as no surprise in the wake of several other stories and rumors circulating. Independent movies under Marvel’s belt include Thor, Ant-Man and Captain America, all members of the Avengers at some point. In production with Paramount Pictures, Iron Man has often been the leader of the team. With Spider-Man only a new member to the comic book roster for the Avengers, it would be unlikely to see Toby Mcguire don the spandex for an appearance. Though with a trilogy of movies, and his own spinoff, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine could very well make it in to the movie.
The question remains though, who will appear in the movie. The roster has changed and reformed and suffered deaths and abuse so many times over the years, it would be hard to pin down exactly what roster will make the movie. Further confusion is added when we consider the actors for the parts, considering their movies; will Robert Downey Jr., Edward Norton and Hugh Jackman actually be in an Avengers movie? Especially considering that it is likely we could be waiting till 2012 for the first one to hit the screens.
All the doubts and questions aside though, this is big news for us all. An Avengers movie is the answer to Warner Bros. The Justice League which has apparently been penned, and approved. As the man in the red, white and blue tights says, Avengers Assemble!
Captain America movie!
Marvel Studios announced that their next project will be Captain AmericaThe president of production at Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, who also produced Iron Man revealed Captain America is in the works.
"We'll have to play with Captain America as being a patriotic propoganda machine on one hand but also being a very human Steve Rogers, ... [an] interesting, fascinating hero in his own right," Feige told reporters on the set of Iron Man, which is in production in Playa Vista, Calif.
Fiege revealed that the story is a period piece with modern-day setting as well. It will likely be a PG-13 film. The writer David Self (Road to Perdition) is drafting the screenplay.
Silver Surfer! Thor! Ghost Rider 2!
First off is news regarding a spinoff for our favorite interstellar surfer, the Silver Surfer. From the LA Times, Fox Studios have already put a spinoff in the works, with fan favorite writer J. Michael Straczynski currently crafting the screenplay. Straczynski is best known for his work writing for "The Twilight Zone" and "Babylon 5," and has also penned stories for Marvel comics. From the same article, it seems that the Thor script has been completed by Mark Protosevich, the writer of such movies as “The Cell” and “Poseidon”. Matthew Vaughn, who was slated to direct X-Men: The Last Stand, is apparently being courted to direct.
Jon Favreau has dropped a tidbit of information at the MySpace site for Iron Man, letting us know that they will be attempting to release the movie on May 2nd 2008 as a PG-13 movie, following in the footsteps of many previous comic book movies.
And lastly, from an interview iF Magazine, Mark Steven Johnson, director of the popular Ghost Rider, gives an insight in to his opinion of a sequel. “They are talking about it and the first film did very well for them, but you know I have been doing my own stuff and not writing anything at the moment. Given how well it did, I would imagine down the line that Sony will want to revisit a sequel and I’ll be happy to look at it then.”
Add to that Spidey 4, Punisher 2, Hulk 2, Iron Man, Ant Man - its a good time to be a Marvel fan..
