Since The Curmudgeon's love for Kick-Ass is so great and I'm not reviewing at the moment, I figured I'd drop some love for my latest ink obsession. The Boys. As far as dark superhero satire and evil comedy goes, it makes Kick-Ass and Watchmen look like Golden Age Superman. Holy shit, this stuff is sick and hilarious. Way beyond parody into outright comic debauchery. DC comics actually canceled the series after a mere six issues. Pick up the first graphic novel/TPB and yo will see why. Parody and satire is one thing, but The Boys so soundly mocks everything DC stands for in such flagrant fashion there's no way the Big Two could keep them on. Imagine the "favors" those sexy B-listers that often end up in the JLA would have to do to get the nod in real life. Oh yeah, baby. It goes there.
So here's the premise. A major American corporation develops a drug that grants superpowers and begins creating and marketing superheroes. But the people with the powers are almost all complete assholes. Imagine Superman with no morals or The Flash with no control. So the protagonist is in the process of falling in love with the girl of his dreams when an out-of-control speedster smashes into her, leaving our hero (Hughie) holding only the disembodied arms of his beloved. Without a second thought to the life he just ended, the metahuman takes off to continue his search for evildoers. Burning for revenge, Hughie is recruited by a team employed by the government known as The Boys. Their job is to keep the superhumans in check by any means necessary. You know a comic is really badass when the leader of the team is this guy:
Did I mention he has his bulldog trained to rape other animals on command?
So yeah, if you thought Kick-Ass was some hardcore comic satire, then brace yourself for some seriously hardcore shit. No superhero or team worth mentioning or comic book cliche is left un-raped in this. If you have a love for the medium and a piss-poor attitude, then this is for you. This series is just sick in the best possible way. It also happens to be very well-written and hilarious with awesome art. Here's some more hotness.
That last one has to be one of the coolest covers ever. God, I love that evil smirk. So yeah, come and have a go at The Boys if you think you're hard enough.
