Dr Who!

I'm not sure if this is on in the US (in fact, the only way I know that Doctor Who is even slightly popular in America is from a couple of Simpson’s jokes) but for fans of accessible science fiction this really is a MUST. SEE.
In my opinion this series has went from decent to superb at a frightening rate. The Doctor had really started to get on my nerves with his gurning and squawking voice, but when he plays it straight he's excellent, and the last few episodes have been some of the best television I've ever seen.
** SPOILER ALERT * *
If I hadn't thought the Mr Saxon character was The Master, I might have thought the old guy (Derek Jacobi) was The Master. At first I thought he might be a future Doctor regeneration, because the clothes he wore were just too.. odd.
But I don't think they could have done a better job of bringing him back. I seriously had goosebumps as soon as he appeared. Was a bit disappointed when The Master turned into Mr Saxon, who went from a genuinely frightening Jacobi to another glib smart-ass, but hopefully that will change in the next episode.
* * END SPOILER * *
All in all - 100% BRILLIANT television, and when you compare it to the utter SHIT its up against in terms of popularity (Big Brother etc) it seems almost too good to be true.
Oh wait - it is. It's being cancelled in 2008. Someone get me a shotgun.

As I've said elsewhere on this board, the new series of Doctor Who really is superb - and most definitely worth a purchase.
The last few episodes have been stand-out.. Yes, even the dreaded low-budget one where David Tennant isn't available because of the shooting schedule which dictates they only actually have time to film all episodes..
Last series one of these was - for lack of a stronger word - a wretched, twisted, putrid, vomit-stained abomination. And one which I'd strongly advise people skip on the DVD collection... Unless you particularly want to see an episode which seems to be saying its core audience are idiots.
This series, however, was a totally different ball game... Go see it.
In terms of spoilers... Yes - the reveal did turn to be a bit of a surprise... Now bring on more of the same, please!
As for the cancellation - I'd hold off on the black armbands just now... Just because Russell T Davies has said he's wanting to do something else instead doesn't (contrary to tabloid scaremongering) suddenly mean there will be no more Who..
Toodles!

Yet another remake sci-fi series I missed the boat on. Sigh. I'll have to check out the DVD's sometime.

Be prepared to shell out major bank on them, then. I still haven't even managed to get the first season yet.
