You know I'm all for pushing gaming technology forward rather than having the big three gaming console companies just ripping each other off all the time. Microsoft's Kinect is obviously a step in the right direction and brings to mind future virtual reality experiences like we used to watch in 80's movies. Unfortunately, it's the present and it appears Microsoft did not really think this thing through entirely in their rush. Now, the obvious motion control boom is attributable the success of the Nintendo Wii, which killed the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 straight out of the gate with brainless party games that were crazy fun (for a short while) so long as you had a room full of people to play them with. The Wiimote allowed you to play from anywhere so long as you could aim it at the tv screen. Now along comes Microsoft's Kinect which does away with the controllers entirely and has you stand in front of a camera which scans your body in three dimensions and responds to your voice and movements. Awesome, right? Well, using a camera means that to play together, you need to both stand in close proximity to one another. Uh. Oh. Here comes the pain!
All right, no worries. Not so bad.
Holy fuck. That smarts.
I have a feeling these are not going to be the last or worst of these videos. Microsoft innovated, but in the end it looks like they put out a product that appears to be poorly suited for it's purpose. Now, doing this online would be cool, but to equal the fun of the Wii, you really need to be able to play with more than one person in the room at a time. And doing that appears to invite the necessity of facial reconstruction surgery. And people wonder why I don't much care about this motion control crap. Great ideas in concept, but I'd much rather just use a controller.
