For thee, Edward; for thee. Yes, those are the real Saints. They don't make 'em like they used to. This Game Boy was BOMBED in the first Gulf War. And it still goddamn works! All praised be to the almighty Nintendo. Get down wit' it. Who knew the Mortal Kombat tourney contestants were so funky? Meet your online gaming partners. This pretty much covers the spectrum. I can represent anything between Neutral Good and True Neutral depending on my mood. Pikaboob, I choose you! Yes. This exists. Crossover alert! Toy Story meets Gears of War. Creepier than you'd think. Ick! If that's what Pac-man really looks like, I'm glad he's not part of the hi-def gaming generation. So wrong. And now you know why Sega failed. The sick truth about Tetris. So that's where all the classics went! Just to change things up... You were waiting for mega-sexy cosplay, right? Well, not this time. Adorable cosplay ftw.

Well, that´s Tetris ruined for me. And Pac Man. Thanks a lot, Trashy!
I remember those Sega ads very well. A lot of them got complaints and, actually, helped them beat the Snes in the UK by a pretty high margin. Like X Box now, the Sega Megadrive was always seen as the "cool" option.
That Pokebra is amazing. Holy shit I need to get that for Mrs C, she´d love it. I think I wouldn´t mind it either.

Represent! Go for it, homes. Of course, you have to say the line before you take it off of her. Seems like UK has Bizarro gamers because over here the "cool" ones were/are the SNES and PS3. Sega Genesis was popular, but aside from Sonic and Mortal Kombat (the SNES version was sans gore) nobody really fauned over it. And thanks to the obnoxiousness of the hi-def generation (you know who I mean: the people who will refuse to watch ANY movie or tv channel that isn't 1080p) the PS3 is on a big upswing. The funny thing is most of the Sony fanboys I know in real life can't even name any games to speak of as a reason to get the PS3. All they can say is "blu-ray", which to me is besides the point when talking about video games. One of the guys who talks shit to me daily for having only a 360 is actually playing PS2 games right now and only using his PS3 to watch movies on. 'Nuff said there.

The PS3 may be in an upswing, but I don't think its popularity is nearly as widespread as the 360. Just about everybody I know who owns a current-gen console has a 360, and just as Guitar Hero and Halo were staples of nearly every dorm room three years ago, now it's Call of Duty. You can't walk down any guys' hallway without hearing frenetic shouting into a headset coming from several rooms (which that spectrum picture you posted covers entirely).

Maybe it's just the people I know. The 360 has still sold a lot more, but ever since the PS3 lowered it's price, a lot of people I know act like the Xbox is for losers or something. Then again, when I ask them how many games they actually own, they never answer. My guess is they all have "Call of Duty" or "Madden" in the title. I have to stick with the system that has the exclusive games I really want to play and right now that ball is in Microsoft's hands, 1080p be damned.

With regards to the MK version on the SNES, there was a gaming magazine that posted an April Fool's joke saying that if you taped a 1 pence coin to the side of the cartridge, that unlocked the blood mode. It was several months later and the magazine was STILL printing retractions along the lines of "IT WAS A JOKE!!!" Although they also said they had letters from people thanking them for unlocking the blood...
Yeah, Call of Duty is THE game for "cool" gamers, and Guitar Hero has pretty much taken over the world. Mrs C bought Guitar Hero and I still despise it. Nothing about that game looks even slightly fun.

Unfortunately, I'm not a "cool" gamer, I'm a nerd. I'm playing a JRPG nobody has heard of and am likely having more fun with it than I would be with yet another cookie-cutter FPS. I like CoD, but the fact that a year never passes without a new one coming out just makes me want to keep waiting for next year's "improved" version. Then there's the fact that the latest has a nearly 50/50 ratio of 1 and 5 star ratings on Amazon. I know gamers are often OCD morons prone to giving games 1 star over one gun that was in the last game being removed from the latest game and ranting endlessly on every message board they can find about how "unbalanced" the game is and it's "for noobs" even while they continue to spend the majority of their day playing it and spend all their time when they aren't playing it obsessing over it on the internet, but still.
