I actually meant to write this as soon as I got home. Better late than never, I guess. So the friends we have over in GC own a bar, and they brought the Wii into the bar one night. It was old news, something ever bar had done about a year or so ago, but for a few nights it was all new again. Playing four player Wii Bowling in a packed bar is always hilarious (and, pfff, guess who was the unbeatable champ?) The genius of the game's pick up and play was there to see - from teenagers to adults to seventy year olds all got hooked again. Anyway, our friends are into all that shit. They've got the Wii and Guitar Hero, so Kinect was an obvious purchase. Before the bar opened, they plugged in the Kinect and I had a few games of the River Rapids game. This one, in fact. www.youtube.com/watch?v=YP-4ZLcV_FIDunno if you got bored watching it, 'cos I sure as hell got bored playing it. Yeah it's something new but.. fuck. Is this IT now for games? Both Sony and Microsoft have bent over backwards trying to copy the Wii, so we've got that stupid black paddle thing for the PS3 and now this shit. Obviously I didn't want to be rude about their £200 brand new purchase, and who knows, maybe it's actually great? But I dunno.. jumping up and down and moving your arms is NOT playing video games. Add to the fact Mrs C was too small for the censor to pick up she was jumping and.. well. Impressed I was not. Anyone else played the Kinect? Am I being too unfair to call it a ten minute novelty?

Check this. kinecthacks.net/The failure of the Kinect isn't in the tech, but in Microsoft's corporate stupidity. As you can see by what people are doing by hacking and adapting the technology for their own uses, the Kinect itself is awesome. Unfortunately, since Microsoft is apparently only looking to use this potentially game-changing technology to do the same shit people already got bored of doing on the Wii years ago, Kinect fails. Badly. Personally, I plan on sticking with the good old-fashioned controller, but hopefully some game company latches onto this thing and does something really amazing with it to change my mind.
