I could've been sold on this until I saw the dreaded letters - FPS. For some reason, my own incompitence mainly, I simply cannot play FPS. I bought Resistance Fall of Man for the PS3 and can barely get past the first screen. Third person games like Max Payne etc? Love them. But games like this depress me, if only by reminding me how shit I am at video games nowadays.
A tongue in cheek parody, perhaps, but unless they change the gaming template 100% I can't see there being a huge amount of difference between the games, especially now they've moved to FPS. And I can't imagine their plots or characters being remotely "deep" either. And yeah, I can't really see it stealing any money from the two kingpins of the franchise.

Oh, that is not the game itself. That was a mini-game made only as an advertisement for a tongue-in-cheek FPS called Bulletstorm. Here is the actual game you'd be paying for that Duty Calls is trying to raise awareness for. After you finish the joke game, you are treated to a trailer for the real game like so:
I love the notion of naming every kill in the game, but there are just too many of these for me to be bothered. FPS's like Half Life and Halo have seriously deep mythologies and stories going on, but I'm pretty sure a game titled Bulletstorm is not going that way. How is playing a 3rd person shooter that different from 1st person? You aim, you shoot, they die; good times ensue.

I know.. I just.. can't get into them at all. I think it's because you can't see anything behind you that I hate, or you can see what's happening in front of you if you're in front of a wall or.. I dunno. I've played a few on the PS3 (can't remember the name, little girls and giant fat robots.. that one) and hated them all. I must be showing my age or something.

Don't know about that. Doom and Wolfenstein have been around since forever.

Okay, so Bulletstorm is out now and I'm going to resurrect this thread for the explicit purpose of posting this article: www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/02/08/bulletstorm-worst-game-kids/Don;t you love that "artist's rendition" of the violence from the game? They couldn't possibly show what the fuck they are on about so they have an artist recreate a theoretical amputation that could have been from the game instead. So yeah, FOX News wants you to know that an M-rated game is being played by 9-year olds with useless parents and that they'e all going to grow up to be rapists because of the video game making puns linking sex to over-the-top bullet death.

Another day, another laughable report by Fox News. Just pitiful journalism that runs out of steam after the hysterical few lines. Since when were the ratings not enforced in retail? Really? 'Cos over in the UK, the 15 and 18 ratings in stores are as strict for games as it is for anything else. In most major stores a warning pops up on screen at the till warning the cashier to check the age of the person buying. Anyway, comedy violence and OTT gore are harmless. Always have, always will be. Oh, and they used the word "gang bang"! That's our future generations fucked, then. Give me a break. I read an article yesterday about a family who starved their child to death "because they were so addicted to an online game." Right, and the fact they were sub-human scum who just happened to have spawned a child has nothing to do with it? The kid would still have been fine if not for this mind-melting game? The media is so fucked up. Can't remember if I've shown you this before, but our mutual friend Mr Brooker looks at the media's scare tactics with videogames. Turns out its nothing new. www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_Uek5k9Y40&feature=related

Beat 'Em and Eat 'Em? Ew. Those porn games were clearly modded version of Atari games (Mad Bomber and Elevator Action, I think). And M-rated games are much harder to come across than R-rated films with comparable content. There are major penalties for selling adult games to minors (like selling them liquor or tobacco), but none being enforced that I'm aware of for films. Shit, my local music/movie store has hentai sitting right on the shelves next to the regular anime. Fucking HENTAI! Plus softcore porn in the "special interest" section right next to the wrestling and UFC DVD's. So yeah, I've been in the game store once or twice while the clerk explicitly warned the father buying his child a violent game about the content and laws regarding it and the father looked at his kid and decided he would look like a wuss if he didn't buy the new GTA or whatever for him so he quickly caved. But it't the video game's fault the kid is being exposed to naughty language and virtual hooker-killing. Right.

Thing is, it won't make any difference. People fear what they don't understand, and fear sells. So games will continue to be made that push boundaries, people will complain and the media will exploit that fear.

I guess it doesn't matter that much as long as it doesn't amount to anything. It's not like Jack Thompson really completely stopped me from getting GTAIII when I was 12 or 13.
