So here is the tale of UFC 127 and the grudge math between British MMA star Michael Bisping and his opponent Jorge Rivera. Rivera quickly began getting under his opponent's skin with the following video:
'Kay. That's pretty funny, I guess. Trash talk is part of the entertainment of the sport. But wait, there's more. Much more. Rivera went and hired an imitator for his next feature, making fun of Bisping's brash mannerisms.
Funny. Point made. Good one. Moving on.......wait no.
That's Monty Python kids. Okay, that was amusing, but surely that's got to be that....
Well, it's nice that Rivera is pointing out that he doesn't have anything against British people...and whaaaaaaa?! I'm all for a good South Park reference, but Jesus fucking Christ that was embarrassing. This is a grown-ass man and a professional athlete, for god's sake. That last bit was the exact fucking moment that I realized that the whole thing had become a cartoon. Even the WWE has a limit to how childish it can get. Do you think Bisping was mad? Let's see what his thoughts on the matter were.
So yeah. Not pleased.
And the fight? Went pretty much like this:
That last image is of Bisping spitting upon his opponent's coaches/co-stars immediately after his victory. And that's that. But all of this along with some other annoying rising MMA stars like Chael Sonnen are really starting to grate on my nerves. The over-the-top dissing had become so theatrical and obnoxious that it's no wonder the real fighters are getting bent out of shape about these clowns turning the sport into a circus. And for the record, Rivera has so many things about him that are ripe for shit talk (he's an ex-con for one thing) that it's a wonder Bisping didn't go there and let his fists do the talking instead.
So how about it? Should sports and sports entertainment be separate or do you think internet diss videos will bring MMA to the masses rather than traditional martial arts' respect for your opponent?
