Anyone here ever see THE ANDY DICK SHOW segment where Andy plays the cousin of Rob Zombie? That's who I felt like directed the mis-aligned horror movie 2001 MANIACS. Hey, no surprise it's a remake. Hey, no surprise it had assistance from Eli Roth. Hey, no surprise it centers around teens getting slaughtered for their lack of morals. Hey, no surprise it features one Zombie-esqe song that blares out of nowhere at a point in the film it doesn't even marginally begin to cast a shadow nearby. Hell, there are NO surprises save one; the racism in the film feels refreshing, much more so than anything else. I'm taking this as a bad sign right next to falling asleep or failing to capture my interest in 10 minutes. It sure had a lot going for it (a brilliant performance by Robert Englund...who manages to entirely shed the Freddy persona for the first time in my eyes), but sadly it fell by the wayside due to a $2 weekend budget, needless story point references, some shockingly pointless scenes that led nowhere....I could go on, but the flaws were far easy to see and made the film. Rather. Dull. Indeed. What, you were expecting an epic sized review of MOBY dick proportions? That's the BAYformers movie review....

Hey, excellent - a review that ISN'T mine! (By the way, all you Amazon folk, feel free to post your own Amazon reviews and additional comments in here too).
Sadly, I haven't seen the film, but going by Wolfy's non-glowing review, I don't think I'll be rushing out to see it any time soon.
Thanks for that, W-M.

Refreshing racism? Do elaborate. Oh, and cool pic!

trashcanman,
There's a scene early on where the "victims" are arriving into the town (horribly convenient, of course). The townfolks are spewing alot of cliché "Southern Confederate" dialog (Yeeeehaw! Damn Yankees. South's gonna rise again...) and the last two pull up on a motorcycle. They are decked out in leather clothing and have helmets on. They pull off their helmets and the jovial crowd goes wide eyed silent as it's a black man with a woman of Asian descent. The mayor (good ol' Robert Englund) looks like he just got stuck between a rock and a hard place. With his eyes wide he says something like:
"Oh my, we've got two more for the jubilee! A negro.....and a chinawoman!"
Now, they could've gone for the obvious "N-bomb" but they didn't. And Robert does a wonderful job both acting and being verbal to display that of course he's a racist deeply rooted in his beliefs but in order to keep the intended victims around long enough to kill he's gonna have to opt to say the most polite version of racist words that he can.
It's hard to explain without seeing it for yourself, but I'm sure you'd agree.
