So, Final Destination 5 is upon us, the horror film no-one asked for is back once again. This is after the fourth movie, dubbed "The FINAL Destination". Bullshit, of course.
I say "of course" because it's now accepted that when it comes to the truth, horror films are as far removed as possible.
Friday the 13th - the Final Chapter. Yeah, apart from the 6 other movies after that, the Freddy tie-in and the remake. Right.
On the subject of Freddy, there's another one that just won't keep his word. "The Final Nightmare" was followed by "The New Nightmare" (sub-title: Fuck You).
The Scream Trilogy which promised to put us out of our misery with the third movie came back to the delight of no-one with another fucking movie.
And it seems like the only genre that does it. You don't see action movies pulling this sort of shit. Or drama's. Or even comedies. When something is The End, that means The End.
So what is the deal with horror, and why do we let them get away with it?

Actually, New Nightmare was meta-fiction and therefore outside of continuity and also happened to be only the second Nightmare that actually worked as a horror film so I'm giving that one a free pass. The Final Destination was the second of the series I actually watched, and only because I had a free weekend of a premium cable channel it aired on. It was exactly the same as the first. Maybe in another 4 films or so, I'll watch another. I got tired of Saw after Jigsaw died and came back a few times over, and Jason got old after the 3rd Friday. I did watch Halloween: Resurrection, but I can't even remember why. Horror seems to have a bankability factor to it due to it's simplicity of cheap thrills, low budgets, and easily banged-out script formulas. Big budget action movies have a higher cost and since they take place in the "real world", audiences are less likely to accept characters coming back from the dead all the fucking time. Besides, the hero never dies in those. But we are getting the rash of Rambo/Rocky/Die Hard/Indy's coming out of retirement for one last asskicking...then another....then another....and so on, so bullsit sequelitis isn't ALL about horror. Just be happy the Wachowskis aren't further effing up The Matrix....yet.

Wooooooooooh hang on a wee minute. Don't forget Dream Warriors Trashy. That's by far the best. (I am assuming that when you said New Nightmare was only the 2nd in the franchise to have worked you meant along with the original). Dream Warriors was funny, scary and just awesome. He attacks a girl with syringe fingers man! Whats not to love?
Again on Final Destination, I have seen the first 3 and yes, they are all the same idea but if you take it for what it is (new and inventive ways of killing stupid teenagers) then it is a decent watch.
Spoiler warning With Saw I 'saw' (f'nar) the first 2 and was not impressed. The first one was amazing, exciting and new and I loved it. The 2nd was just shit. I mean jigsaw has cancer so his daughter is kicking about killing people for him? Pleease fucksake.
Jasons were all shit and Halloween had 3 decent ones (1,2 & H2O) then a fairly decent remake by Rob Zombie (haven't seen the remake of 2 yet).
On your point about action films being "real world" and audiences being unlikely to accept characters coming back from the dead and all that well Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Rambo, and more recently Fast & The Furious. Yes The characters don't die but to be fair after what they go through in each of the films in these franchises they bloody well should be and that in itself is unrealistic.
Here is a wee nugget for you Curmy. They said Indy 4 would be the last Indy film yet they are making another. Also in the sci-fi drama they keep popping out those Alien/predator/terminator franchises even mashing them together. So maybe sci-fi is starting to take a leaf out of the horror book.
Lets hope Harry Potter 8 IS the last Harry Potter though eh?

Dream Warriors was very entertaining, but not even a little scary for me. Do yourself a big favor and don't bother with Zombie's Halloween sequel. Potter ran out of steam for me (and my wife, who was a fanatic) 3 films ago. No fucking mas. Oh, and yeah, you'll note the quotation marks around "real world". Those action films are ridiculous, but people's minds work in weird ways when it comes to fiction.
