It's always a bummer to go see a movie that blows your mind (Apes) to a movie that.. well, was just pretty good. It's especially a bummer when you consider who's behind this film. You see J.J Abrhams.. you see a movie about aliens or monsters or whatever the fuck is in that crate.. you expect something pretty damn special.
What you DON'T expect is a Goonies style kids movie, where the kids are the heroes and the adults and military are the jack-asses. If you're coming in expecting Cloverfield 2 or the next Lost. Super 8 isn't like that.
The monster isn't going to challenge Godzilla or Kong in the icon stakes, but it's got bags of charm and is a lot of fun, and the train wreck scene is the loudest scene I've ever sat through. I dunno if it was just the cinema I was in had the speakers too loud or something, but DAMN. It was like being there. If Super 8 was filmed in 3D I may well have shit my pants.
There are a lot of nice background images of cult horror icons to spot, and a nice reference to a certain Fortress hero as well. I imagine Super 8 will be fondly remembered in a few years by people who'd first seen it as 12 year old kids (the movie's age limit in the UK), rather than the jaded, "OMG Worst Movie EVER" 30 year old's who paid to see it expecting a genre-changer.
In short - a good, funny, enjoyable monster movie. What more do you want, haters?

Waiting for the DVD release. When I read about the ET/Goonies kiddie movie angle, I decided to skip it in theaters, lest I suffer from excessive disappointment.

Yeah, seems fair enough. It's not an essential view, but it's certainly worth a watch. Waiting for the DVD seems like a plan.
