While we're on the subject of vampires, it struck me that, despite being one of the most played characters on screen, with Dracula there are only three really stand out performances that stick in people's minds, and it's more of a generation thing than anything else. When you say Dracula, people think.. Or.. Or maybe.. It's been almost 20 years since Gary Oldman's Dracula (that really is an under-appreciated movie), so do you think it's time the cape and fangs were worn once more? Consider.. Is there anything left to do from the book that we haven't seen before? Would modern audiences want to see another Dracula movie? Is there anyone that instantly springs to mind that could play the Count? And discuss..

Have to say I think Bela Lugosi every time. It is the image that is so the definition of Dracula. Others may have been good (Christopher Lee, Gary Oldman) but honestly Lugosi just looks, right?

Lugosi is indeed the true Dracula, Quillguy. You pass the test. Welcome to The Fortress. Also, what a question, Curmudgeon. OF COURSE, I want to see more Dracula films. I've been eagerly awaiting a film titles "The Last VOyage of the Demeter" that is going to take place entirely aboard the ship Dracula uses to get to Britain. That is an AWESOME idea. Taking one mysterious chapter of the book and fleshing it out into a horror story all it's own. Don't know what happened to it (it used to be talked about often), but I can't wait to see it. Also, here's a shocker. Dracula is on of the most adapted novels and the 2nd most adapted fictional character of all time (behind the great detective), right? Well, the novel has never been adapted into animation. Seriously. FUCK, I want to see that happen. If I had money and talent, the first thing I'd want to do would be to write and produce an adult animated version of Dracula. It's bizarre to me that nobody has done it already. You're fucking slacking, Japan!

Maybe I should've asked the question differently; what I meant was would you like to see another take on the same story? Harker arriving at the castle, "I never drink...wine", the ship, Mia... that whole deal. The story we all know. Would you like to see another take on THAT?
As for the idea with the film being set on the boat, I think that's an amazing idea. If memory serves, didn't the boat turn up with no-one on board, except for Renfield? I would love to see that.
I'm amazed it's never been made into Anime. Maybe the story is just a little too tame for their tastes?

They made Count of Monte Cristo into an (awesome) sci-fi anime, so shockability is not a factor. Hell, they've done Romeo and Juliet too (haven't seen it, though). Most anime is not crazy sex and violence any more than most movies are. That aspect just gets a lot of attention in the West because that sort of thing just isn't done in animation very often here. But yes, damn it. I would like to see another Drac adaptation AND DONE RIGHT. I want to see the scene where the mother of the baby Dracula fed to his brides wails and pounds at his door begging for her child back only to have him summon wolves to tear her apart. WHY HAS THIS NOT BEEN FILMED!?!? Given Coppola's version's penchant for sex and ultraviolence, I'm baffled they left it out of that one.

Shit, I have no memory of that. Was that in the book?

Yeah. It's one of the most shocking and violent things in the novel and it's never been filmed to my knowledge.

Why have I no memory of that? I'll have to read Dracula again.. it's probably been, like, 15 years since I read it anyway. What did you think of the original Frankenstein novel, Trash?

Better than the films. Better than Dracula. The best supernatural existential novel ever written.
