I need to stop going abroad. Nothing but bad things happen over there. First, that "shouldn't someone be arrested for this?" karaoke abomination, and then the news that.. the Simpson's is being cancelled.
At first I wrote it off, saying "trust me, I'd have heard about that if it were true" (I didn't sound like such an arrogant asshole either.. I think). So I checked online the next day. And my heart broke. It was there in black and white (not even in yellow); the Simpson's will be cancelled after it's next series.
At least, that's what I thought. Yet the site I found abroad in an internet cafe just isn't there anymore, and all I have left now are "it's .. maybe .. being cancelled" reports.
The amount of negative comments hurled at the show now just boggle the mind. Hell, resident Dweller Invisible Wolfman said on Facebook there hasn't been a good episode since Season 12! Because, yes, we are SO spoiled with smart, subversive, daring, original comedies now, aren't we? With an entire world of quotable, loveable characters, near the knuckle gags, spot on parodies and political and social satire. Can't fucking change the channel without seeing one. South Park is South Park, obviously, but it can't touch Groening's gang when it comes to heart (nor would anyone want it to). And Family Guy can eat balls.
If the Simpson's really IS coming to an end it will be a huge, crushing loss to TV. Some people won't even remember a time it wasn't on. Some of us do. And it sucked. And it'll suck even more if it gets canned.

The people who rag on The Simpsons are people who don't watch it. Plain. Simple. Mental children who consider Family Guy to be the zenith of animated comedy, and adults who don't want to admit they're embarrassed to watch cartoons but still want to have input into a popular nerd culture icon they used to know and love. I still watch the show religiously, and I have since the day the first episode premiered. And it still makes me laugh more on any given ep than the entirety of The Hangover 2 did. They are still not afraid to risk going over people's heads with sly jabs at people like Ayn Rand, nor to mock soundly both sides of any given argument (including religion) or culture, and they continue to forge ahead without repeating themselves after nearly TWO DOZEN YEARS. What's your favorite show? Try and picture it after 23 seasons......Still better than The Simpsons is? BULLSHIT. There is no fucking show you can picture being watchable after that amount of time. Period.
Still, I won't mourn The Simpsons. It's a one-time only kind of show that was better than anything that cam e before it and left a massive dent in pop culture that will never go away. After some 23 seasons to go out still one of the best-quality sitcoms or satires out there anywhere should be celebrated. How many shows died a whimpering death a couple of seasons after the writers ran out of ideas and people only watched it grudgingly? I still look forward to every single episode and I will continue to until there aren't any more to look forward to. That's something only a few other shows can say, and none of those have been on more than a decade. I'll be happy to see The Simpsons go out on top before the love is gone. That said, I fucking hate "Nedna", and if there ever was a shark-jumping moment, that could well be it, and a conclusion to the series will save us from years of that nonsensical eyesore of a couple. So if the show is going, there is no better time than now, and I'll bid them a fond adieu. If not, I'll keep on watching till I don't wanna. Simple as that.

On topic - excellent points, all, Trash. The fact that the Simpson's is still going - strong, fuck the haters - after more than 20 YEARS is staggering. Have there been weak episodes? Hell yes (my personal least favourite episodes are the pretty damn lazy "three stories re-told with Simpson's characters" that they do all the damn time now). Like I said before, though, there's still no TV show that can touch it, certainly not anything approaching the longevity of the show itself. Nice list there. That Kill Bill board is amazing. I would love to have seen that. I would've enjoyed it more than watching the movie, that's for sure. As for the Simpson's predicting things... OMG CONZPIRICY!!1!!
