I've mentioned the new UK channel Sky Atlantic on here before; it's basically the UK's equivalent of HBO. They take all of HBO's programming, from the present and the past, and put it all on one (free to subscribers) channel. So we've had Soprano's - from the beginning. The Wire - ditto. New shows like Mildred Pearce and Boardwalk Empire too.
A couple of days ago they began showing Seinfeld from the very beginning as well, and it's a show I've never even seen before. Heard about it, sure, but I'm not 100% positive it was even aired in the UK (at least not in a decent time slot, anyway).
The pilot episode played after the voice over guy said "and here it is.. the show that turned the sitcom into an art-form. Prepare to be hooked." That's pretty big hype, right there.
So the question to anyone who's seen it; is it worth the hype? Is it really the greatest sitcom ever?

In a word: yes. There is no other sitcom I would consider watching in it's entirety again. It's really hard for an American to comprehend somebody just now watching Seinfeld because it's become such a cultural touchstone over here, and it's just crazy to think that it hasn't yet been exported to the UK. Most sitcoms get less funny the older they are, as if the jokes have an expiration date, but Seinfeld I think is pretty much immune to that. It's just plain brilliant and hilarious in a way that I don't think any other sitcom has ever approached. Enjoy.

OK, I'm now onto the second series (they show two episodes a week over here.. I didn't know the first season was only SIX episodes. It's usually the UK that do series that short).
Love it. Love the stand-up routines interspersed between the show, love the characters.. I was always lead to believe it was "a show about nothing." I imagined it would just be a bunch of people standing around talking shit and being funny for 30 minutes, but all these episodes like.. have a point. Things DO happen. There's a beginning and an end and a resolution is met. I feel like I've been lied to all these years.
Oh, Mrs C can't stand it, though. Just doesn't find anything funny about it at all.

I realize I'm a bit late on the scene, but Seinfeld is indeed worthy of much excitement. In my opinion, the first and second seasons aren't even that good. Everything afterwards is classic television though.
