OK, so I got an iPhone 4S today. Haven't used it yet, but I'm looking forward to 16GB of music instead of struggling to contain all of my ever increasing music library to an 8GB iPod. Oh, and Angry Birds. Why fight the madness? So yeah, I'll embrace technology. One thing I simply do NOT understand, however, is the "Triple Play" set that movies come in now. Watch on Blu Ray! Fine. Watch on DVD! Fine. Watch.. on your phone? Whu? You want to watch a fucking MOVIE on a tiny screen? What is that about? Why would you want to? What possible enjoyment can be gained from watching anything on a 4.5 (large for a phone) screen? Some films are said to be seen best on a cinema screen, that watching it at home on a 46" plasma screen just isn't the same - so why would anyone want to watch a film on a phone? And yet one glimpse at iTunes show that this is a market that continues to grow. So that's it. The world has gone mad. Who else, then, but cinema's greatest madman, your friend and mine, Mr David Lynch, to restore some sanity to the world with this beautiful message; www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKiIroiCvZ0&feature=player_embeddedThank you, David.

Not a huge fan of Lynch as a filmmaker (although I respect him and what he tries to do with his movies), but that message was just pure goddamn truth. The ONLY way I would ever bother with a digital copy of a film is if I has an iPad and spent a lot of time on airplanes or something. And I absolutely deplore these combopacks. If you buy the film on blu-ray, why would you want to watch it on DVD? If you buy the DVD, I assume it's because you don't have a blu-ray player so what the fuck are you supposed to do with the blu-ray copy, use it as a coaster? And Lynch has the digital copy perspective covered. This shit is just an excuse to jack up prices by making people buy shit they don't want or need. Fuck 'em. I won't do it.

I think the Digital Copy/Blu Ray/ DVD pack is made to trick people into thinking it's a Triple Disc set. I certainly fell for it the first time I bought one of those combo packs, thinking I was getting three discs of content. Not just two discs I would never even fucking take out the box.
Onto Lynch - I always thought you'd be a fan, Trash. Blue Velvet did nothing for you? Twin Peaks? Eraserhead?

Eraserhead made my skin fucking crawl. I think it's brilliant in that sense, but I found it so unpleasant and unnerving to watch that I can hardly call myself a fan considering i can't honestly say I enjoyed it. Never seen Blue Velvet or Twin Peaks. I enjoyed Mulholland Drive a lot until Lynch took what had been a great story and....well, Lynched it up. I think the guy just tries too hard sometimes to make his films super-artsy and mind-melting in a way that often just plain gets in the fucking way of the viewer enjoying it. It's a hard line to walk, making an artistic film full of symbolism and metaphor that is still enjoyable in a straightforward manner, and I think that is a line that Lynch simply cannot see. Some films that steep themselves in symbolism encourage me to watch them again and again because I also enjoy them on a superficial level (relatable characters, engrossing story, etc) and even if I never completely "get it", I still love watching said film. But Lynch's just don't really do that for me. Again, I respect what he does, but it often just isn't my cup of tea.
