The game of the year is dropping in a mere 4 days. Could prove to be my favorite of all time. In fact, if it isn't, it will be a disappointment. Mass Effect 3. Seriously, if you have nay interest in science fiction or video games as an interactive storytelling medium, this is a series you absolutely cannot miss. It's like Star Wars, Star Trek, BSG, Blade Runner, Halo, and everything else awesome about sci-fi had a baby together. These are without a doubt the three best games of this console generation and this trilogy closer looks like it's going to hit it out of the park. Watch these trailers if you don't believe me. Watch them even if you do.
Serendipity has this game launching right before my days off with my vacation coming immediately after. Goddamn, I can't wait to piss every second of my time off away on this baby. It'll be a thing of beauty.

You know those "at first I was and then I was" pics? Well, check it out; Mass Effect 3 normally wouldn't even register on my radar because it's a First Person Shooter, my most hated of all genre's. I bought Resistance 2 for the PS3 and couldn't get past the first damn part. I suck at them.
Don't get me wrong, the trailer and the gameplay look amazing. AMAZING. That opening trailer alone is better than any movie trailer I've seen this year. But, it's a First Person Shooter - therefore it's out of my league. So this is my "at first I was like" part. Disappointed.
But now I'm like - fuck YES. Know why? Because it's also a third person shooter, my most beloved of game genre's.
Serendipity, indeed. This game looks great.

Not a first person shooter. Not at all. This series is nothing less than interactive fiction. A lot of your time will be spent conversing with awesome characters, altering massive story events with decisions tailored to your personal sense of morality, and choosing your own path to victory however you see fit with consequences to match (up to and including major character deaths). God, single decisions I made in the first game are coming back to me in a big way here in the third game (you actually upload your saves from previous games to determine various factors in the sequels based on your character's past actions) The actual shooting is fairly minimal. Unfortunately, the first game is only available on Xbox (which is really a shame), but 2 and 3 are on the PS3. I can't really get into why this series is the greatest thing to happen to gaming since the first wave of Final Fantasy games hit without writing a book. The writing alone makes this the best science fiction story of this generation and the fact that you get to make every major choice along the way makes it something really unique in any genre of entertainment. I'm taking my time with the trilogy closer (read: I don't want it to end) so I'm not finished yet, but I'll get to it sometime this week and expect earth-shattering results. Maybe literally if I don't play my cards right. Anyways, definitely give the series a shot and let me know what you think.

I have NEVER had a chance to play these after this trailer - maybe, just MAYBE I will. But sadly money is tight in Quillford land so it may have to wait....

The first two should be pretty damn cheap, Quillguy. I'm closing in on the grand finale and I think I may need therapy fter this game is over. Man... what a story. My head swam from some of the decisions I was forced to make and the resulting consequences. This is one of very few games to make me FEEL when I failed or succeeded. Watching characters you spent dozens of hours getting to know die (possibly even by your own hand) because you failed to make the a certain call in a previous game and was forced to choose between two races in a genocidal conflict, or made an oversight while trying to cheer up an old friend (or lover) earlier is an experience that dwarfs the emotional response any other game has ever delivered for me. The word seems to be that people HATE the ending, but I'm going to wait until I see it to weigh in. I hope people are just being artless losers, because I'd hate to be disappointed by an ending that "ruins" a series that was otherwise bordering on flawless for the previous 90 hours of gameplay.

Wow. Holy shit. After reading all that, Trash, consider me SOLD. I just thought it was another run along and shoot the shit out of things game. If it's as in-depth and layered as you say... DAMN.
It sucks the first game isn't available on the PS3. Maybe it's on the PSN?

Nah, it was developed by Microsoft so expect to see it on a Sony console never ever. Really, I'm just stunned by the interactive depth that this series has delivered on. Unheard of in any medium. It really does suck that no xbox owners can't get to play it from the beginning (it'd be like not putting "A New Hope" out on DVD with the other Star Wars films), especially because some of the decisions you made in the very first game impact plotlines in the third and seeing this stuff come to fruition is just soooooo cool and adds a whole new level of appreciation to how far video games have come as a storytelling medium.

I finished the game yesterday and the ending is a bit of a head scratcher to be sure. Massively epic, but it leaves so many holes, and is ultimately unsatisfying in so many ways that people's reactions are ranging from theories that the finale was all a delusion implanted in the main character's head to swearing off Bioware as the worst game writers of all time (when they are in fact, the best). But there are hints being dropped (including some at the end of the credits) that "the end" is not really The End and that this is all a way to get people talking before the drop the true finale on us in DLC form. Now, I don't like the idea of ending DLC as I think the finale of any game should be on disc as a general rule, but given the lackluster quality of the ending to what otherwise was the greatest sci-fi saga of this generation, I'm kind of hoping that the theorists are right on this one as more Mass Effect can only be a good thing. People complained that Bioware kept telling us "your decisions matter", but the ending is functionally almost identical no matter what else happened up to that point. The implications of your final choice are very, very different, but you never see anything different regardless of what you chose, which pissed people off, and rightly so. But Bioware has been responding to fans via Twitter and telling them to keep their saves and continuing to say that they are listening to us and that the choices do matter. Here are some choice morsels currently being discussed among the fandom that give us hope. User 1: "I still want to believe you guys are sneaky trolls and have something going on you don't tell us yet. Can I get a cryptic reply?" @masseffect: "The sun, it shines. www.youtube.com/watch"
User 2: "You are either a massive sadist or a beacon of hope." @masseffect: "Can't it be both?"
User 3: "I kinda feel lost after that ending...not what I expected and left me feeling everything done was for nothing." @masseffect: "We know it's a lot to take in! But hang in there. Your decisions matter."
User 4: "Are you holding something back, that could quell the large amount of frustration from the community, a tiny hint would be enough." @masseffect: "Mike Gamble already said on his twitter, if the fans knew what was in store, the reaction would be different."
User 5: "I loved 98% of ME3..but something has to be up w/ ending..too much talent at BW for that business. Keep my saves?" @masseffect: "We're keeping our saves, that's for sure."
User 6: "Fans are people too. Playing with their minds isn't that nice as it may look like to people from Bioware." @masseffect: "We're not playing with anyone's minds, we are answering what questions we can and recording what feedback we receive."
User 7: "Its not that the ending was taken in the wrong direction its that it makes NO SENSE. Ashley was on the Normandy? she [was] with me." @masseffect: "Probably a good thing to be cautious of."
User 8: "Do y'all have any ETA when more news will be released? Dying for news on a new ending/DLC." @masseffect: "No ETA yet, but you will be updated via Facebook and Twitter when the news is available ."
And some more:
User 1 -Well, i think i'll stop naggin you and trying to get you to talk about the indoctrination theory. Good game though! Merizan - I want people to make up their own minds right now, then when more people have played we'll talk
User 2 - then I want to SEE that he was lying. I want to get up and finish the fight with Commander Shepard. Then retire. Merizan - augh. want. to. discuss! Staying spoiler free for now So yeah, there is hope that the ending was just something to build up hype and controversy before they drop the big bomb. Let me just say that if some of these theories are correct, the game could bust the 4th wall and become the most memorable ending of all time. But if there is ending DLC, let me just say it'd better be fucking free.
