So anyways, I'm sure all of us denizens of the web have noticed probably the oddest (and loudest) animated phenomenon currently blowing minds over the last few years. The rise of the Bronies. It started with a Civil War on 4chan, has grown into an overwhelming support network with more memes than...well, goddamn anything, and is currently embroiled in yet another PC controversy over a cross-eyed character that some assholes consider offensive to...someone I guess (there are 730 results for "save derpy" on youtube). I speak of the cartoon My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and their insane fandom. Behold.
Now, at first, I agreed with the young man who declared these MLP fans trolls, but this has gone on for a long time now and having seen interviews with these folks and the fact that "Bronycon" is a thing that exists I'm starting to think that this show might just be as fucking awesome as people say. After all, it is created by Lauren Faust of Powerpuff Girls fame, who has a way with making girly things legitimately cool and funny. But the question at hand is, am I going to watch it....ever? I consider myself an animation connoisseur and I must admit that the memes on this thing are pretty killer. But I grew up with two primary conflicts with my little sister. One of them was my preference for McDonalds against hers for Burger King, and the other was my love of Transformers against her evil My Little Pony. They have always been the enemy. Now, I'm not one for the ridiculous gender prejudices shown in the above video, but I think that some part of me is refusing to let me watch even a clip of this show that I otherwise cannot get away from while browsing the cyberscapes I frequent. On the other hand, how can I not give a chance to something that spawns awesomeness like this:
and for the naysayers, there's this little bit of pop culture sense:
So has anybody else been following this? Is this the greatest troll ever trolled or has My Little Pony actually become cooler than Transformers in my lifetime? Discuss.
