I'm sure there's an official term for it, hell, maybe even a genre, but what do you call it when a band you like reference ANOTHER band you like, either in the lyrics of a song or even the title? Of course, you've got throwaway references in rap songs that don't really count, I'm talking rock bands or artists mentioning other bands. A couple from me first; The Manic Street Preachers struck gold with the "sequel" to the Holy Bible album, "Journal For Plague Lovers." One of the (many) highlights is "Jackie Collin's Existential Question Time", and no - Jackie Collins isn't the reference here. (And the change at 1:43 still gives me goosebumps). www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpSzPL-Qu20And then we've got the Dandy Warhols. Always effortlessly cool, who could THEY possibly hope to be as cool as? Well, how about one of the greatest female icons of alternative rock ever? www.youtube.com/watch?v=56W16EMxi54Two for two. Your turn.

I was going to go with Jedi Mind Trick's "calculating infinity with Dilinger Escape Plan", but you said no rap references. NOFX has this one referencing The Descendants, DOA, MDC, and Suicidal. Kind of a lame song, but lots of grabbing for punk cred with name-dropping. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jxvq-pbfcYQThis is the best song on Pantera's final album which features the lyrics, "Your trust in in whiskey and weed and Black Sabbath" and Slayer gets similarly name-checked in the second chorus. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRiZ_Gy2mxgI thought it was clever in The Atari's cover of "Boys of Summer" they changed the words "I saw a deadhead sticker on a cadillac" to "Black Flag sticker" too. I know there are plenty more, but I'm kind of drawing a blank right now.
