After hearing about the multitude of musical magnificence that was to be the season finale of Saturday Night Live, I DVRed and watched the show for the first time in almost a decade. If you've ever wondered what Mick Jagger would sound like backed by the likes of Arcade Fire or the Foo Fighters, come get some.

The show itself had it's ups and downs with a hilarious Stones karaoke and Jagger himself embodying Steven Tyler and mocking his sudden turn towards Burger King-shilling lameness being high points. Then there was what has to be the worst fucking SNL skit I've ever seen called "The Californians" which was just horrifically inexplicable. Apparently New Yorkers think that Californians talk like a mixture of the turtle from Finding Nemo and Napoleon Dynamite and spend all of our time staring into mirrors and name-checking highways. And shoehorning Jagger into the sketch was a bad, bad idea as he has a hell of a time trying not to sound English. No goddamn clue what any of that was about or who checked off on it. Plenty of ways to make fun of California, but I don't think any of them (other than hamburgers and Jamba Juice) were in that mess. Also, I was really excited to see Jagger perform with the Jeff Beck Group (I've long been in love with their bassist), but if there was one goddamn thing I was no wanting to see, it was an Englishman's musical take on the fucking presidential election in blues jam form. What a miserable waste. At least I got to hear Beck's jagged guitar tone, though. That shit is wicked. Also, Krist Wiig got what has got to be the greatest send-off in the history of everything. Awesome. Lastly, god I love that tomboy in Arcade Fire who was playing violin next to the drummer. Do you think she'd marry me? Unlikely I'll come back to SNL for another decade or so, but it wasn't a complete waste.
