If you're from the US, you may not know it's the Queen's Jubilee this weekend, marking 60 years of her being on the throne.
If you're from the UK, you will almost certainly know this, as it's been rammed down our fucking throats for months now. Quite WHY we're celebrating an outdated parasite who is our "ruler" for no other reason than what family she was born into is beyond me, but there you go. Suffice to say, come the Jubilee, the only time I'll be saying "God save the Queen" is by following it up with "the fascist regime."
Anyway, there have been all sorts of polls naming "The Best.." from the last 60 years, and here's a REAL eye opener.
The Best British Album is a poll that's been argued over and discussed many, many times in magazines and blogs, and there are usually three or four usual contenders that always win. It's either the Beatles, Oasis, Radiohead, and sometimes a wild card like Queen or the Arctic Monkeys can sneak through.
Well, THIS is a wildcard.
I'll get it out the way first - the public voted, and it's not any of the above names, nor is the album I referenced earlier. It's not the Smiths, it's now Bowie, it's not The Who or Led Zepplin. The Best British Album of 60 years iiiiiiiis...
Yes indeed. Iron Maiden's "The Number of the Beast" was voted the best British album. And get this - fucking DEPECHE MODE at number two? I don't know who voted in this, but I want to high five every one of them.
Here's the top ten in full;
1. Iron Maiden – 'The Number Of The Beast'
2. Depeche Mode – 'Violator'
3. The Beatles – 'Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'?
4. The Beatles – 'Abbey Road'
5. Pink Floyd – 'The Dark Side Of The Moon'
6. The Beatles – 'Revolver'?
7. Queen - 'A Night At The Opera'
8. Oasis – '(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?'
9. Adele - 21'
10. The Beatles – 'White Album'
So what do we think of this? OK, it's obvious block voting by a dedicated, faithful following, but it's still pretty damn cool. What records would YOU put in the top ten?
