Here come some of that old school NYC hip-hop, courtesy of Boogie Down Productions and frontman KRS ONE (Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone). If you want to know the history of hip-hop, BDP is arguably the best place to start seeing that KRS ONE is known as "The Teacher" and practically invented several rapping styles along with the idea of using rap as an educational tool for the streets. These guys got started during the first rap boom of the 80's and made their bones battling rival crews, most notably the Juice Crew, who practically had their career ended by KRS's lyrical haranguing after their biggest supporter, a local DJ, made the mistake of passing on BDP's debut track. After taking offense to a JC lyric they interpreted as crediting Queensbridge with inventing rap, the South Bronx natives crafted their first hit by lyrically smacking their rivals right in the mouth. The battle is the stuff of rap legends and includes many classic tracks.
This track is from 1988's "By All Means Necessary" album, during the recording of which, DJ Scott La Rock was killed in a crossfire while attempting to mediate a street dispute. KRS has implied that he believes rap's celebration of violence and criminal behavior was at least partially to blame for the culture that ended his friedn and partner's life (their first album was called "Criminal Minded"), and has since dedicated his rhymes and his life trying to end street violence. KRS ONE is one of hip-hops most legendary, flexible, charismatic, and respected MC's, and this is "My Philosophy", arguably his definitive track.

Note, I'm not a big fan of the beginning of this video which chops up the musical track and breaks the rhythm of the song too much, but it's still a cool vid.
