So I was at a metal festival yesterday, and while it wasn't headline acts or anything (it's a friend who organised it and it's the first of what will hopefully be an annual event) but regardless of how many people were there or how big the bands are, the same problem remains.
I just can't get into metal.
Don't get me wrong, the musicians are all super talented guys, the vocalists were all capable of knocking over a wall with one roar but FUCK I find it tedious.
I saw about eight bands last night and if someone stuck a gun to my head to remember even part of a song I'd be dead.
And yet, all around me, people were having a great time, and I felt like I was ... like, missing something that everyone else seemed to understand.
So what is wrong with me?

You just don't relate to it. There's an energy to metal that you just can't really get in any other kind of music, but if you don't get it, I guess you just don't. I'm the same way with dance music. Everybody else seems to bee super-impressed with redundant one-note beats, synth riffs that are just as repetitive, and vocals that mostly consist of one line repeated over and over but whatever it is they get out of it, I can't relate. Metal is largely based on psychological catharsis; the release of aggression and anger in a blast of noise. Add the various musical complexities, variety of styles, badass imagery, and the relative exclusivity of the fandom and you've got yourself a powerful subculture. If it was designed for everyone, it would lose it's appeal to most fans (hair metal, anyone?). That is to say, it's no big deal to not be into metal. That said, aren't you a Slipknot fan, C? That's what's weird. Slipknot is about as metal as metal gets so being into those guys but not liking metal is unusual to say the least.

Yeah, I know, that's what I find weird too. As I've said before, I love rock music and alternative rock but metal just doesn't do "it" for me. I mean, it's different not "getting" dance music because you don't like the genre and consider it shit. That's fine. But I DO like rock music and I don't think the music itself is bad but it just.. leaves me cold. Saying that, it could just have been all the bands playing the festival were shit. You're way more knowledgable about this than me, Trash. Take a listen to this, these guys were pretty high up on the bill. Good, bad? www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2uD7Lvv1KI

I'm with TCM I imagine you just can't relate. Either that or your getting on and becoming and old Curmudgeon. I'm sure this isn't the case. There will be a metal band out there for you - i'm sure. Make it like YOUR thing to find it.

Those guys were all right, nothing new, but not bad at all. Speaking of which, there is a lot of that going on in the mid to lower tier of the genre. Bands who don't really add anything to the genre but just kind do what they've seen other bands do, which I'm just not really a fan of. Compare the legendary "Big 4" of thrash metal, for example: Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax. 4 bands with very distinctive sounds and styles that formed the early thrash movement. No way in hell could you mistake one for another. You still have groups like Dillinger Escape Plan coming up with new and more extreme styles and Slipknot who hae a lot of style as well, but most local shows are just going to be full of Killswitch and Hatebreed clones or whatever black metal band is cool at the moment. That's the main reason I only dabble in metal these days.

Trashcanman is right about most newly-formed metal bands these days being generic and redundant in sound and style, even if not necessarily bad. I think one of the best metal bands of recent years is The Sword. They're from Austin, Texas and they have a unique sound. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1g_B3l_ReQU

Nothing to do with being old quilly I on ly like 2 bands that could be considered metal. Slipknot cos they wear scary masks and have good chat and marylin manson cos he is awesome. other than that not my cuppa T. I like rock music but I also like dance and I get why alot of people don't like dance, it can be quite monotonous but I like it when it gets proper heavy so i guess i like my heavy metal on a set of decks. By the way dunno if you heard Korn's first single featuring Skrillex but this is what I speak about pretty much this..... www.youtube.com/watch?v=pI0Kwutugeg&feature=relmfuBithcin!

If liking the music has more to do with how the performers dress than what they sound like, does it really count as liking the music? Think Manson will ever get desperate enough to release a dubstep album, or will he keep beating the 80's hits covers dead horse?
