www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9ZTP2k0DRcIs there a Wizard of Oz fan here? I hear there was. Anyone enjoy the films of one Sam Raimi? So here it is, Raimi's Oz prequel. What say thee?

Hmmmm. On the one hand, I love the idea of going from sepia to full colour (and the difference in the trailer is stunning), but the mention of Alice in Wonderland in the credits does the movie no favours, because that's all this looks like. Crazy CGI creatures float around while humans interact and make bug-eyed "shocked faces."
I really don't know.

Me neither. I actually enjoyed Burton's Alice in Wonderland as remakes go, but I wouldn't call it a classic in any sense of the word. I figure if Raimi can do at least that well, that's about the best we can hope for.

The thing is, it's deeply unfair to try and compare the two movies. One is a film that anyone under 60 has grown up with, and it's SO cemented in our popular culture that you don't even have to have seen the film to still understand any references about flying monkeys, not in Kansas anymore, your little dog too etc etc. There is just no way any new film can touch that.
But it's still going to happen, and I can guarantee 99% of online reviews will have the words "not as good as the original" on there. Even though, y'know, the Judy Garland version wasn't the original in the first place.
