(NO SPOILERS HERE)
So with all the hoopla, hype, disappointment and, well, death surrounding the final Batman movie (before the much rumoured reboot.. REALLY?), that other superhero movie that came out at the same time has largely been forgotten. So much so that I went to see it on the same day as Bats and forgot to mention it.
Which is a shame because, in some ways, the Amazing Spider-Man is actually better than TDKR.
For one, it didn't have the enormous weight of expectation that Batman did, and it also wasn't bogged down in making things as grounded and "realistic" as possible, so the principles of the comic book could actually be embraced. Mad scientists inject liquids and turn into rampaging monsters? Why not?
Those expecting a basic re-write of the comic book will be disappointed, and I'm sure more than one person raised eyebrows at the shameful re-writing of the origin story. It's nice they've created their own mythology that looks set to be a major part of this new franchise, along with some shadowy, "all will be revealed" figures that were always a major part of Spidey storylines.
So, the new Parker is fine (if a little TOO good looking to be a believable, lonely nerd), Gwen is simply delicious (it's Emma Stone, she's never anything but) and the Lizard is a genuine surprise. Don't expect your standard slobbering monster, but do expect a visual throwback to the 1960's villain).
In short - no classic, but plenty of fun, with some great performances and some eye-popping visuals. Now the pesky origin is out of the way, the sequel should be a blast.

I can't believe I skipped this one. It just didn't look good to me. And with TDKR right on it's heels, I couldn't get amped up about it. I'll definitely give it a rent, though.

You know, it probably worked for the best that I had zero hopes for it at all, and was only going to see it because it was Spidey. I expected to shrug it off like FF or Ghost Rider or one of those "other" super hero movies that come and go and are quickly forgotten. But, I happily stand corrected. Like I said, the sequel could really be something special.
