Quillguy is still doing a sterling job on the Your Verdict series, so I thought I'd drop this in between his picks. This isn't your typical "verdict" (or I'd just do it myself when my time rolls around again). This thread today is to see if I'm alone in this big ol' world. For you see, I like, no - love, a song that whenever anyone hears it, they at first say, "what the FUCK is that?" and then laugh when they find out who it is. So, Lou Reed, then. Counter culture icon, alternative rock pioneer, destroyer of Metallica's career.. he was, is and will always be COOL. That most troublesome of qualities, few have it and fewer retain it, but Lou Reed, whether it's his work with the Velvet Underground or the likes of the flawless Transformer record, has it in droves. Except, it seems, with the following song. Because it's not a tale of junkies, sex and rock and roll. It's a love song written to his wife when Lou was in his forties. That's it. Now, most people roll their eyes at the fact he can't sing. He's singing a love song, a ballad, perhaps, and he can't sing?! But I'd rather have a genuine record of affection from someone than some overblown power ballad, written by three guys and sung by Whitney Houston. Anyway, that's my take on it. Have a listen and see what you think. www.youtube.com/watch?v=15y63U3LM9YSo I'm firmly in Team Lou, but what's your take? Loveable or laughable?

I've got to say right off the bat that there should be a fucking law against rhyming "heart" with "apart" and "love" with "above". Nothing in the entire world is more cliche and tired. Jesus Christ do I hate that shit. And "fight" with "right" is nearly as bad. Other than that, I say give it to Reed. The song is really good aside from the horrible rhymes, and I could give a shit if he has a beautiful singing voice.

It's funny, I was thinking about the rhymes a few days ago, and part of me (wants to) think it's maybe deliberate. I mean, the whole song seems pretty simple to me, from the guitar to the "Romeo, Romeo" lines.. Reed's never had problem writing original lyrics before, so I figured maybe the nursery rhyme level of writing in some of the lines was intentional. Or maybe I'm looking way too into it.
But hey, you like it, at least. That makes two people I know on this planet. Including myself.
