Your Verdict: Quillford Essentials - Week Eleven

Frail and tattered I come to you with my penultimate defence against mainstream music and it's shaky development for I see no rhyme in the reason, I hold no hope for this holy treason that I can't rock shit up again before I head bang off to a cave to become a social recluse with only itunes to keep me right.

This week I am bringing to you a band that has coloured my life with many a fine tune. Heavy sort of stuff but not Grindcore heavy. Good heavy metal with some abusive angry lyrics with the occasional scream. Get ready to be blown out by DISTURBED.
These guys were technically around since '96 as "Brawl" but I seriously would say that there is fuck all worth paying attention to till around 2000. This is where they broke fame properly and began to tune into a sound that is well, ear shitting awesome. They broke in with two demos "The Game" and "Down with the sickness" two amazing songs and should most certainly be listened to if you take MY verdict.
Even now this band is releasing A quality stuff and should hopefully make a return of hiatus soon to give me another cranial bleed from all the mental I will be giving it. You may remember "Down with the sickness" from the movie "Dawn of the dead" - the remake of course (One of the few Romero remakes I enjoy) by jazz singer Richard Cheese who does beautiful shit with beautiful songs.

Anyway onto this weeks pick o' the week. I bring to you "Stricken" from their third album "Ten Thousand Fists" not only is the shit hot tune but a brilliant album! Stick it on, have a few shots and go crazy. THIS is the band to do it too. I love this dude's vocals. Anyway with out further ado...

Disturbed is not a band I'm passionate about, but the are consistently decent for a mainstream band. They put on a nice show too. I remember I saw them with a coworker who had never the rant section of "Down with the Sickness" (they cut it out of the radio edit) and he went fucking nuts when the performed that part on stage likee he couldn't believe what he was hearing. Good times. One thing that rapes my ears is how Draiman (whose voice is refreshingly original) feels he has to come up with some weird noise for EVERY. SINGLE. SONG. In this one its "owowowowooo!" and in another it's "woooahahahah!" and yet another will be "rah rah!". it's cool every once in a while but what is cool quickly becomes cheesy when it's that overdone.

I've heard a couple of Disturbed songs before, and yeah, I'd noticed he does his little "wa wah whooo" sound effects as well. I haven't heard a lot of their stuff, but that would bug the shit out of me if he does it in a lot of his songs. You make cooky sounds, dude. We get it.

Saying that, "Down With the Sickness" is pretty much untouchable, and its not been overplayed so much that I roll my eyes whenever I hear it. "Stricken" is pretty good as well, but it's not even approaching my radar for the stuff I'm listening to just now.

Trivia; did you know Disturbed once did the theme music for Steve Austin? He was a bad guy at the time, and the music suited perfectly. This is the music of someone who will fuck you up.

He does that noise thing on every single song on their debut and on every radio single I've heard since so I have to assume he does it on all of the rest of his songs as well. Other than that, cool band, though.
