Open minded, mainstream shunning music fans that we are here at the Fortress, it’s not uncommon for us to seek out new music and artists that you haven’t been force-fed through MTV saturation or exposure on TV. Maybe we’ve just heard one random track and decided to investigate further with a full album, or word of mouth online (like, hey, on here) or glowing media praise has made you take the plunge.
Sometimes it pays off. I’d only ever heard one Raveonettes song before I bought their “Attack of the Ghost Riders” EP and the debut album. Result? Still one of my favourite bands, and every album is now a Must Buy.
I’d never even heard a note of Ryan Adam’s music, but still bought Gold after reading a foaming mouthed review from (I think) NME, and the little sticker on the front of the CD had an assortment of five star reviews and quotes. So I bought it and it’s now probably in my top ten favourite albums ever.
Like I said, though – sometimes it pays off. This thread is dedicated to those bands and albums you had SUCH high hopes for that turned out to be utter flops, relegated to gathering dust on your CD rack forever.
It seems baffling now, but when their debut single “Swing, Swing” was released, I was convinced that All American Rejects were my New Favourite Band. I even remember holding the album in my hand with the thought I’d found the new Weezer. I even blindly bought tickets to go see them. Big mistake. Twice. Their kiddie-heavy gig sucked and the album is an attitude free, rock-lite dud, and it remains a “you bought THAT?” conversation starter when people see it. Saying that,“Swing, Swing” is still a guilty pleasure.
There’s also been high profile flops from the likes of, whisper this, Papa Roach and Evanescence (Jesus, what WAS I thinking?), where one track did NOT an album make. I could go on with more one hit wonder bands that initially showed such promise, but frankly it’s beginning to depress me. It’s someone else’s turn.
So who promised so much and delivered so little for you?
