I've got to say, there is a shit ton of stuff to watch on tv this season. I've never had such a bounty of quality as I've had the last few months. Let me share.
First off, the out-of-nowhere shocker Last Resort. DAMN this show does not mess around. No one seems to be talking about it, but this is the boldest show I've seen in.....maybe ever. The premise is a submarine captain who refuses an unusual order to launch nuclear missiles into Pakistan and is labeled as an enemy of the state. There is only one kind of morality in this show and it is grey as hell. It's actually shocking how far Last Resort pushes the envelope as we have a hero threatening to nuke his/our own country while raising questions about the true meaning of patriotism, duty, and morality. This is the show to watch right now. And yeah, a recent episode almost mad me cry, which is a first in a long time.
And then, of course, there is Arrow. This show has kicked so much more ass than I was expecting. Green Arrow has always been a politically-charged character as sort of a Batman figure who learned what is was to be starving to death and have to fight for survival while shipwrecked on an island. When he gets home, he dedicates his life to righting the wrongs of his family and their business partners by shutting down high level corruption in his city. Given the growing unrest with the wealthy, the time was definitely right for this. Couple with Last Resort, mainstream art is imitating life by questioning authority and the less-than-legal techniques the wealthy use to become wealthy and consolidate enough power to multiply that wealth at the expense of everybody else. While the characters have all changed from their comic book counterparts, the show itself is fantastic and badass as hell. Plus it has DC players like Deadshot, Deathstroke, and Huntress making appearances.
Then, of course, there are the new seasons of American Horror Story and The Walking Dead, the first of which has been consistently good in both it's seasons so far while the latter has a VERY bumpy second season. AHS may have actually improved in it's downtime, returning with a new cast and a new story bringing to mind classics like Shock Corridor with sprinklings of Freaks, The Exorcist, and plenty more horror goodness. TWD has returned with a fresh outlook having rid itself of the useless baggage of the Shane/Rick conflict that made most of last season a redundant slog through the same dull shouting arguments. Now they are focusing on slaughtering zombies and killing off the cast with superior results. They are still not following the comic, but as long as it's good, that doesn't really matter.
Lastly, there is 666 Park Avenue, which is another show that borrows elements from those who came before (most notably The Shining) and makes something different and compelling. Terry (John Locke) O'Quinn plays the devilish owner of an old New York high-end apartment building preying on his tenants' souls, and he's damn good in the role. This is solid horror television and another underrated sleeper success of the season.
Anyone else wanna share?
