So I've been wanting to do this for a while, but seeing that the music board here is the one that gets the most love, I try to give to the others whenever possible. But I've got some time to kill after a 3 day anime and Halo binge and I'm feeling like it's epic music time. In this thread, we pick one of our most favoritest musical artists of all time. Somebody whose entire career you've followed. Then, you are going to pick 5 of their 5 best songs to sell us on them. Doesn't have to be obscure or anything. If you want to rock some Elton John or Led Zeppelin, get down with your bad self. As the thread title indicates, I want god-tier stuff from artists who have affected your life up in here, and if you want to make multiple posts with multiple artists over the next few days/weeks to keep the love flowing, that would be awesome.
So for my pick I'm going with an artist I've already talked up a lot and included in the Your Verdict series, Immortal Technique. This guy brought back my love of rap so freakin' hard. I had literally forgotten that this kind of music was even possible. I'm picking him because my YV post got some love and this guy's catalog is just so amazing that you simply can't do it justice with a single track. I can't even do it justice in 5 songs. A hyper-literate underground rapper who utilizes musical styles like epic film scores, orchestral arrangements, flamenco guitar, jazz, and other sonic textures so rarely found in hip-hop with some of the most brutal, real, and educational lyrics I've ever heard in any musical style. His hardline approach and dedication to politics may turn a few people off, but one could spend days/weeks researching and fact-checking his endless referential indictments of the US government and it would be impossible not to come out disturbed if not appalled at the things you'd learned regardless of your political persuasion. Also, it's worth pointing out that not all of Tech's music is political. He is an incredible storyteller who has nearly brought me to tears with his words before and I'd like to show that here as well. Before I shut up and kick out the jams, let me finish my gush-fest with a quote from the man himself that pretty much knocks the idea that his style of music can't succeed in the marketplace:
"To all these bitchass A&R's who are too lazy to come up with a way to sell records so they keep recycling marketing schemes and imagery:
C'mon..
There is a market for everything, man.
There is a market for pet psychologists, nigga.
There is a market for twisted shit fetish videos,
for nipplerings, for riverdancing, for chocolate covered roaches...
But you can't find one for cultured hardcore reality and hiphop?"
Truer fucking words.
So whenever somebody tells you rap music is a bunch of vapid, talentless bullshit, here's something you can show them. Also, if you want to hear some more Immortal Technique but don't want to commit to buying a full album, allow me to plug his FREE online album, The Martyr, which is probably one of the best rap albums you'll ever hear even if you don't consider the price.
