So yeah, there was a (roughly) 8 hour concert broadcast on television last night as a telethon to raise money for the apocalyptic devastation Hurricane Sandy wrought on New York and New Jersey last month. And holy hell what a line-up of performers. I'll give you a taste of the highlights including the surprise Nirvana reunion with an unexpected frontman and a brand new song. But let's take it from the top.

The Boss opened the show with a decent set of relevant non-hits plus a duet with Jon Bon Jovi followed by Roger Waters' set of classic Pink Floyd closed out with some Eddie Vedder. After that Bon Jovi played a few hits and returned the favor by inviting Springsteen on stage. Good times all around. I was actually shocked to hear what I thought was boos both times Springsteen took and left the stage (dude is a fucking HERO in that region), but after googling it found out it's customary there to yell "BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!" which sounded to this West Coaster like boos.
After that there was The Rolling Stones who played a meager and unimpressive two song set (You Got Me Rockin' (?), and Jumpin' Jack Flash (!)), and the supernaturally beautiful and talented Alicia Keys proved she is one HELL of an artist with a short solo piano set of two songs. The Who blew the goddamn roof off the place sounding better than they have in forever and included a touching tribute to fallen hero Keith Moon by performing Bellboy with a video of him doing his part. I was very pleased and surprised. Clapton played some solid middle of the road standards, and Kanye West put on a hell of a set, rapping his ass off backed by a team of DJ's with a few live instruments to boot. The guy is a tool, but he does live hip-hop right. Props. Billy Joel actually got the biggest reaction from the crowd, playing several songs (and not the ones you'd think) that had the whole audience dancing their asses off. The man is sooooooo underrated. One of America's greatest songwriters for sure. After that it was Chris Martin with a brief acoustic set where he was joined by Michael Stipe for a rendition of Losing My Religion. Not bad. Lastly, Paul McCartney took the stage with his band and killed it dead with is opener, Helter Skelter, and then bringing out Nirvana for a brand new tune was shocking to say the least. Alicia Keys came back out to close the show with her beautiful tribute to her city.
All in all, hours of my life well spent even if I couldn't afford to donate in spite of the pleas of aging m/billionaires with more than enough wealth among them to rebuild NYC 10 times over without even feeling it. I started this thread intending to compile the highlights myself from youtube, but it appears they are killing the videos dead in advance of selling iTunes downloads, dvd's, and cd's of the performances so I had to settle for the above news story. That and the thing you really clicked on this topic to see:
