Well, it's been a while, kids, but The Curmudgeon is back in the saddle for the latest run of Your Verdict. And as Mrs C finished off on a high with the Hives (see what I did there?) I figured I would have to start off with something pretty damn good. And I have just the thing.
The Go! Team may sound like an early morning kids cartoon, but it's actually these guys
A bunch of British musicians, rappers and singers that joined forces to create (to date) three records that all wowed critics and made pretty much every "Best of" list of their particular year.
Its about this time I would normally tell you exactly WHAT music they make. But I can't. It's too hard. Instead, let's head on over to Wikipedia instead;
"The Go! Team are a six-piece band from Brighton, England. They combine indie rock and garage rock with a mixture of blaxploitation and Bollywood soundtracks, double Dutch chants, old school hip hop and distorted guitars."
Yeah. What they said.
Lots of reasons to love The Go! Team. They created and recorded their debut album in the guitarists kitchen. They covered Sonic Youth's "Bull in the Heather" as a bonus track on the 2nd record. One of their video's is a live action chase of Pac-Man ghosts chasing Ms Pac Man through New York. They have a lo-fi, DIY-style approach (these video's aren't going to give the billion dollar efforts from Will.I.Am etc any sleepless nights).
So because we're only on our first week, I'm going to be super self indulgent and ask you to give THREE tracks a listen today. It's usually one, I know, but I just can't decide which track to showcase. I'm essentially spoiled for choice.
Here's the first track that I ever heard that got me interested in them in the first place. Lead rap by Ninja (yeah, their rapper is called Ninja. Beat that). This is "Grip Like a Vice."

The second track is the opening song on the third album and when I first heard it on my iPod it stopped me dead in the street.

Now, in case all of this is getting a little much, here's something just a bit different. Imagine you're going through someone's record collection and you find a 60's pop single from a Japanese girl band. It would sound like this. "Ready to Go Steady" is as sweet and naive as it's title. Warning - this song will steal and break your foolish heart.

And that, friends, is The Go! Team. God, I fucking ADORE this band.
