Shiiiit, no WAY are we half way through this series already? Time flies when the hits are playing, I guess. Anyway, this week we look at a band that achieved quite an unusual feat; they maintained a level of mainstream success and recognition but remained odd and kooky enough to alienate a majority audience, and instead developed a beloved, devoted cult following. In fact, when it comes to British bands who began in the 80's, I think only the Smiths have a more passionate fanbase in the UK. I could show you pictures of the entire band and you would probably have no idea who they are. But one picture of the lead singer and you're right on board with me. For it is this man; And yes, it is The Cure. They're always a band I've been interested in from afar, but I've recently developed a bit of a thing for them. The songs are wistful, romantic and unashamedly catchy. As far removed from the "Goth" look Robert Smith conveys, the Cure's songs are in no way doom and gloom. So I could have played you one of their more well known hits (in the UK, at least - are the Cure well known in America?), like Friday I'm in Love or Close to Me, but today I thought we'd take a look at one of my particular favourites, The Caterpillar. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzxJ5YvYfx4

Yeah, The Cure are very well known and respected over here. I've never found them to be very gloomy either in spite of the fact that they are usually identified with sad, depressed people. I've found that not to be the case. Robert Smith even guested on an early episode of South Park where he turned into Mothra to battle Mecha-Barbara Streisand. Also, video won't play in this country. Shit.

I'd heard of the Mecha Streisand episode but had no idea Robert Smith actually appeared on the show. Wasn't that really early on in the South Park series? I didn't think they would have attracted big name guests at that stage. Anyway, we'll have to do without the official video, but here's the track in question www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWgMFP9-Jy0
