So last week we had The Cure, a band who really don't need much introduction. This week, things are a little different. First of all, the main culprit in today's line-up is someone that's been mentioned once before here, Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian. He started a side project, inspired by Phil Spector's principle in creating 3 minute orchestral symphonies with undeniable pop hooks. He also backed out of (most) of the vocal duties, which is only fitting because the God Help the Girl project is a 60's inspired album from a collection of female voices and perspectives. This was no mere "one and done" solo project before going back to the day job, either. The full length album has been followed by a superb 5 track EP, and shooting began on a movie, directed by Murdoch, featuring all kinds of indie Scottish bands and artists. He even auditioned for key cast members on his website. Anyway, the following song detracts from the formula of a girl lead vocalist, and instead brings in Neil Hannon, lead vocalist of Irish group The Divine Comedy. What starts as a rather simple love story ("they walked around each other, fighting for the mirror and smiling") suddenly takes a VERY dark turn (where am I? What have I got on?") Never before has a song hinting at kidnap and rape sounded quite so beautiful. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwzkJ_ZpjfoEt voila; my favourite track from my favourite album in some time. Hope you like.

Oh man, I love the 60's-style production.
