On the penultimate episode of this series, I thought we'd look at one of the best surprise support bands I've seen in a long, long time.
You know the drill with support bands. You stand there, half listening, clapping politely and wondering if you want another drink at the bar. There have been the odd exception, and this one has a spooky symmetry to it.
Many moons ago, I went to see Garbage, who were.. y'know.. alright. Nothing great. But the support band really caught my attention, and they've went now down in history as one of my most beloved bands. That was Scottish rascals Bis.
So I went to see Bis a few months ago, and they were supported by a band I hadn't heard of. It was a tiny (awesome, awesome) venue and I expected to do the usual support act stuff; half listen, clap politely and OH HOLY FUCKING SHIT WHAT IS THIS??
It was this band;
Four unassuming young guys in matching white shirts making an enormous fucking racket and jerking and running around the stage like the Benny Hill chase sketch directed by Ray Harryhausen. They were funny, the songs were great and I bought the album (sold out at the gig) the next week.
So, We Are the Physics. Named after a football slogan you see scrawled on walls in Scotland (WATP - We Are the People, there's also the charming FTP - that would be "Fuck the Pope"), they have an obvious link to jerky, weird alt-rock like Devo, combined with their own offbeat sense of humour (the album I bought is called "We Are the Physics Are OK At Music").
Anyway, take a listen. It'd be hard to re-create just what they do on a live stage, but it's fun nonetheless.

They are in serious danger of becoming my New Favourite Band.
