Sigh, well it's been a good run. hasn't it? But 12 weeks is, by supreme law of the universe, all I get. And so I thought I'd end with a tale of success, failure and then success again.
It's actually the third time, in a way, this guy has been mentioned on the Your Verdict series. The first was from his original band, UK pop royalty Take That, the only boyband it's actually socially acceptable to like. The second was from Mrs C's run and most successful solo act to come from that group, Robbie Williams.
And here's the third. Mr Mark Owen.
And while Robbie Williams became a household name in the UK and a bonafide superstar, Mark Owen.. well, didn't. And it was a shame for two reasons. One, Mark seems like the nicest guy in pop music and two - the music he released as a solo star was actually pretty damn good.
It wasn't enough for the UK, though, who were clearly only going to accept one member from a boyband to their hearts, and so Mark Owen's solo stuff was pretty much ignored and forgotten. He was dropped by his record label (twice) and it was only with the triumphant return of Take That a few years back he's managed to survive pop's wilderness at all.
Which is a damn shame, considering the sheer amount of drivel that was selling in the higher end of the charts when his solo material lay gathering dust. It's way more enjoyable, genuine and heartfelt than most other chart clutter. But hey ho, that's the British public for you.
Anyway, to lay this series of Your Verdict to rest, here's Mark Owen with "Makin' Out."
