Yes, you read that correctly. Pink, as in, ahem, "P!nk", the cartoon "rock chick" who's about as rock and roll as Simon Cowell. I've never been a particular fan of hers, although Mrs C kinda likes her and I certainly prefer her to washed out pop dullards like Leona Lewis, but all in all - meh. Pass. Except for THIS song. Mrs C bought it from iTunes and played it for me, with a knowing look in her eye because she just KNEW I'd love it. And burn her for witchcraft - she was right. So, "Just Give Me a Reason" is a duet, a fairly old fashioned love song no less, between Pink and the lead singer from Fun. For anyone who's heard the band, and I know Trashy bought the second album recently, as soon as you hear it, you KNOW it's clearly written by the Fun. frontman, because it just SOUNDS like a Fun. song. I often browse through the top ten these days with a tut and a sigh, but every so often (Ke$ha's "Tik Tok", Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe") I hear something that melts the ice around my black heart and has me giddy as a schoolgirl. You can now add this one to the list. I mean.. DAT chorus. Damn. See what you think; www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpQFFLBMEPI

Well, there's always been been much worse than Pink out there. A lot of her songs are plenty listenable, she's hot, and her voice isn't terrible or anything, but her fake fucking attitude and constant trend-chasing just turn me off so much. If you are going to dress up like Wendy O Williams and sneer like Billy Idol and shit, then I'd expect something a little more substantial then Avrilesque whining about how Britney Spears is so much prettier than you or dumb as fuck bullshit about getting the party started. This songs not bad at all. If she can concentrate on one sound that is hers instead of just chasing whatever is at the top of the charts at the moment *cough*fun*cough*, he could still have a respectable career.

Whoa whoa whoa, let me get this straight...
The Curmudgeon is a fan of "Call Me Maybe?"
That God-awful crap was the bane of my existence all summer long.
But back to the topic at hand. Pink. My opinion of her is practically the same as Trashcanman's. She's not the most clever lyricist, and she comes across as so contrived I just don't have the stomach for her. I've always thought it was pretty arrogant of her to rag on other celebrities for using sex appeal and the like (the song "Stupid Girl" or whatever that track was particularly bothered me) when Pink does the exact same damn thing. But wait, Pink is oh-so badass it must be different when she does it.
I'll pass.

Oh, I'm afraid so, Ben. In fact, I put out a thread dedicated to Call Me Maybe when it was originally released. Loved it then, love it now. It's like it's been designed by robots who have been programmed to create a piece of music with the purpose of its sinister message burrowing into our brains. I think it's fantastic. Seriously. Carly Rae, super cute that she is, is a guranteed one hit wonder. But man. What a hit.
Anyway, my main problem with Pink is her latching onto what's cool at the moment. When she first came out, she danced around in her bra to hip-hop beats, but scrapped that entire sound for the next album (suspiciously after Avril Lavigne became a star) and settled for her new pop-rock. Granted, she's stuck with that even when the pop formula moved onto David Guetta style "EDM" (Electronic Dance Music), so props to her for that, I suppose.
I have no real problem with people like Pink in the charts. She IS a decent pop star, and 13 year old's could grow up idolising worse. Not exactly hard on the eyes, either.

I can definitely agree there are worse artists out there, but I'll never be a big Pink fan. I'm also not sure I'll ever read your posts the same way again now that I know you get a kick out of "Call Me Maybe." I may have even seen that thread you made about it back when it was chart-climbing, but if I did I wiped it from memory to preserve the image of you I have in my mind. Which is something like this: Except the printer is bad music, and the bat has rusty spikes on it.

Hmm. I'm probably doing even more irreparable damage to your image of me here, Ben, but you DO know I'm a irony free Britney Spears fan, right? Got every single one of her albums. Is she a great artist? Nope. Great singer? Hell no. But do I enjoy the hell out of a lot of her songs? Well...yeah. Would I lose a kidney to sleep with her? Same answer.
I think that's why I enjoy my Amazon reviews so much, (the guy with the baseball bat in your picture), because I AM a fan of POP music in its many forms, so it makes it easier for me to identify bad examples of it. Call Me Maybe, irritating and sugary sweet and all that, but its a remarkably well crafted pop song, and one of the few chart hits people are going to fucking remember in years to come.
The way I see it, music is very much like a diet. I've got a pretty decent, healthy musical diet, full of protein (R.E.M, Smashing Pumpkins, Prince, Bowie), vitamins (Lou Reed, Manic Street Preachers, Blur) and minerals (Beatles, Stones, Arcade Fire, Belle & Sebastian) but every now and then a sugary treat like Call Me Maybe or a Big Mac like a Britney record won't do you any harm. If your diet consisted of nothing BUT that stuff, well, that's another story.
Moral of the story; the Curmudgeon likes what he likes.

You don't ever have to apologize for liking what you like so long as you aren't an idiot about it ("Beliebers") , but I'd like to go on record again as stating that Carly Rae Jepsen's music is bad and she should feel bad. She'll never be more than that woman-child that Beiber made into a star on a whim.

I'm aware of your Britney fandom, Curmudgeon, and I won't fault you for it- I was quite the fan myself back in the day. I wasn't trying to make you feel bad; we've all got our guilty pleasures, but "Call Me Maybe" just sounds to me like it would be something you despise. I think you're right about remembering it in 10 years though... It'll go down with "Iggy Thump" as one of my all time least favorite songs.
