In one of those "so.. this is happening over here" threads, thought I'd share this amusing little event that's going down in the UK right now.
There's a new (surprisingly enjoyable) TV show called "The Big Reunion", a fly on the wall style documentary following a number of faded, forgotten pop bands from the 90's, and getting them all back together for a one off show, which I imagine would probably be the worst event since 9/11.
It's an interesting show because it doesn't really pull any punches. It starts off documenting the bands early success and then talks about how the public forgot them and they were dropped by their label. The popstars themselves took to drink, drugs, mental breakdowns, bankruptcy.. all that fun stuff.
Anyway, it's a decent reality show but what happened last Saturday was something no-one saw coming.
For those in the UK, there is no introduction necessary. For those elsewhere, THIS is Ant & Dec.
They started off as teenage child stars (in a kids show playing friends PJ and Duncan) and then became pop stars in their own right (again, as PJ and Duncan), releasing a string of (terrible) singles, but in particular, this one. Note: you only need to hear the first 30 seconds to know how bad it is.

Yeesh. The 90's, eh?
Anyway, they then really found their niche presenting TV shows together. From kids TV to the highest profile TV shows in the country. They stuck together and not only became legitimate millionaires, they also became the most dependable, likeable and enjoyable double act on British television. It is - seriously - impossible to dislike these guys. They're THAT good.
So they present a TV show on Saturday nights, and their guests were some of the groups from The Big Reunion. As a bit of a gag, Ant & Dec raided their own 90's wardrobes and came out to sing their most famous (terrible) single, Let's Get Ready to Rumble, tongue firmly in cheek. If you're interested, here it is live.

So here's the punchline. These crap pop bands desperate to cling to any fame and hungry for another bite of the cherry are completley ignored by the public.. while Ant & Dec's joke performance of a joke song catapults the 1994 original straight to the top of the UK charts.
Ant & Dec, both obviously shocked and more than a little embarrassed, donated all proceeds to charity. I can't imagine any of the other pop acts from that show doing that.
And so, in 2013, Let's Get Ready to Rumble is number one after 19 years. Oh, British public. You so craaaaazy.
