We've mentioned the Beatles once before in the Fortress of Solitude, as part of the Your Verdict series, but just thought I'd give this song it's own thread. It's THAT good.
And again, like many Beatles tracks, it's a song I've always kinda KNOWN, hovering around the back of my mind. It was only last week I bought the Magical Mystery Tour album and was blown away by just HOW good this song actually is. It's a cliche to say "oh, the Beatle's songs are all timeless", and it's an untrue one as well. The earlier albums are full of stuff that really is of it's day. Doesn't make it bad, per se, but the majority of the tracks found on the early records can't come close to touching this.
It, literally, could be released tomorrow and no-one would think "wow, that sounds old fashioned" or that the band are trying for a retro sound. Put bluntly - it still sounds fucking bad-ass.
Anyway, like me you'll probably know this song through other people without ever sitting down to listen to it yourself. Now's your chance and, fact fans, this is the one and only performance of this song captured on camera (apparently). Drink it in.

One of these days when I'm rich I'm going to have to get the Beatles complete set. I have to say, though, I've never been in love with that particular tune. The music is fine, but that brand of nonsensical lyrics and melody kind of give me a kiddie vibe. Chorus sounds pretty epic, though, and I have been known to deadpan it for comedic effect so I can't even pretend to hate it.

You're quite right in the "kiddie vibe" comment, because some of the lyrics are cribbed from a children's schoolyard rhyme. Going through Beatle's albums is a bit of a humbling experience when you sit down and think about it. You would think a world famous song like this would be the stand out track on any album, but on that one record alone you've also got Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields Forever and All You Need is Love. Frightening.
