Here's an infographic of interest. In spite of DC's inability to get their shit together on most non-Bats/Supes related projects, the competition is a lot closer than you'd think due to DC's 20 year head start (more than 30 if you don't count Howard the Duck). Behold.

Great find. What's really, really apparant is that, if it doesn't live in Gotham or Metropolis, DC is screwed. Watchmen aside (which was great, but didn't really do that well sadly), DC just can't get their characters on screen, and if they do they're terrible. Steel? Catwoman? And even THOSE are cribbed from the Superman/Batman table. And does Jonah Hex even count? Jesus, DC.
And it's so strange, because it's a got a pool of easily identifiable characters. Why can the Flash be made into an enjoyable TV show in 1990 but not into a movie? Wonder Woman, a character with a built in audience of horny males, STILL hasn't made it to the screen? What are they thinking? How can (arguably) the biggest comic book company in the world have only two (and that's pushing it, 90% of Superman movies are garbage) have one winning franchise?
After a jittery start, the Marvel Movie Machine is in absolute full effect, even shrugging off flops like Ghost Rider and Punisher. They took SUCH a risk with that Avengers cross-over idea but man, did it pay off.

Oh wow, I just noticed even Watchmen did better than GL. Damn. Everybody knows who GL is and still no dice. And even the non-Marvel studios films are looking alright. I'm kind of dying to see X-Men: Days of Future Past. Ellen Page is the absolute perfect Kitty Pryde, but Ratner clearly had no clue of that fact so I'm really looking forward to seeing a director who actually gives a shit about the franchise direct her.

I didn't realize Punisher did so poorly. I enjoyed the hell out of it, even though the sequel was trash. One would think DC would kick its ass into gear after the success of the most recent Batman trilogy.

The first Punisher film was pretty damn good, although kind of toned down from what I'd expect. DC is definitely trying to get their shit together with the new Superman and are even trying to ram a Justice League movie down the pipes on the way to a Batman reboot after The Avengers went over so well, but not having their own studio like Marvel does is definitely hurting their odds of succeeding on that front. Having creative control over their own franchises has done wonders for the quality of the Marvel movies. Now if they could just get the rights to Spidey, X-Men, and the FF back we could really get the party started.
