Hey guys So for the last 12 weeks Curmy has been delighting you with sounds of the Pop Justice League. Well I have some good ideas for this too, so have been given permission to do my own poll for the next 12 weeks. There is a general food theme here. Y'know being a trained chef and all. So If you like it then its a michlin star if you don't then its a "would you like fries with that?" see? easy. So here we go! First up we have Dizzee Rascal. He started out life as an up and coming Grime artist from London who was considered cool, cutting edge and exciting. Not very accessible to people who are not into that genre so imagine my surprise when in in 2008 he teamed up with the now superstar DJ Calvin Harris and released this absolute belter of a track! Unfortunately what followed this has been a 5 year assault on the UK charts with a cascade of EDM/ commercial bullshit where at one point you could not turn on the tv without seeing his big gurning face bobbing about the screen to the latest "chooooooooon". With exception of Bonkers most of his material that followed this has been mediocre at best. But this song to me, being a bit of a dance fan, has everything. A great beat some good vocals from a now not very vocal Calvin Harris and a fun rap from Dizzee. Everything a pop song should be. www.youtube.com/watch?v=GibLntdLiJATrashy - I know you are a bit of a fan of robbie williams so I stuck in an extra one for you Dizzee's last song was a duet with the man himself. Enjoy! www.youtube.com/watch?v=eG-yMcqwR6o

Hmmm.
Hmmmmmm.
This is tough. See, part of me thinks "oh, this is a fun song, you know? Nice beat, catchy chorus, fun lyrics (even if the "you made a real effort and it shows" bit is unebelievably condescending..try saying that to a real woman and see what happens, Dizzee), but then the other part of me turns off at the idea that Dizzee is just obviously looking for a payday, and has been since this song was a hit. After "Bonkers", which was enjoyably ridiculous, everything he's done has been instant switch off for me. Huey Morgan from Fun Lovin' Criminals said it best.
"Current rap music is not real, the music’s made by somebody else and these guys are rapping about a car or a girl. I didn’t hear any self-deprecating English humour in there. I think irony is dead as far as that goes. These guys are just trying to make money.
UK hip hop artists would sell their mama for a Rolex. It’s all crap. I’m talking about Tinie Tempah, Lethal Bizzle. Dizzee Rascal, when I first heard his song, I thought there was something wrong with him. I didn’t get it and I grew up on hip hop.
Paul Simon is from Queens, he probably came from a rougher neighbourhood than Lethal Bizzle did. Go to South Bronx in 1978, that’s tough. People are shooting at other people, like random drive-bys in Los Angeles. NWA comes out, those guys came from the street. I see kids, Chipmunk and stuff like that, walking around like they think they own the world. I don’t hate the game, I understand what it is. To me, I might be an old man now, but it’s kind of fake. Rap was never supposed to be commercial. Now it’s not hip hop, it’s ‘hip-pop’."
Music snobbery aside, I won't lie that I DID like this when it first came out. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it now or anything but yeah, it is what it is. I don't think "sublime" is the ideal choice of words for this, but I'll give it the thumbs up anyway.

I usually really dislike Dizzee Rascal. Every time I try to get into him something about the man, be it him personally or his music, just doesn't sit well with me for some reason. I tried my best here, again, but I'm sorry, I just don't see it myself. I gave it a vote down!

Alright, so - I like a bit of rascal when I feel in the mood for it. I have seen him live once, well nearly twice (I passed the stage rather slowly at T in the Park a few years back). This track is my favourite of his from him as it goes. But the reason why, is the same reason I voted it up - Calvin made it. I imagine Harris had a lot more to do with this track behind the scenes to make sure the tune was just right. For that reason it was dead catchy. I hate the lyrics and the way he spits them in this track. I have heard lots of newer artists who are recently in the business rapping like there reading from a lyric sheet and this is exactly what he does here. Take a spin on a bit later say "Holiday" or heck even "Bonkers", the lyrics sounded like they came to him much more naturally and likewise they were much bigger songs (right? Mrs C and 'mudgeon verify this?). The catchy tune, the edited chorus and harris made this track a pass for me but it didn't do it with any colours and was very close to being a Pizza Hut. Ramsay wouldn't eat this if it came down it, he'd be all "That's fucking disgusting". NEXT.

The first tune was listenable, but didn't really phase me either way so I'm giving it a "meh". I liked the one with Williams better, though. Thanks for that!

So It looks like Dizzee is getting a pass then. YAY! Kaiford - He speaks the lyrics the way he does on purpose it goes with the timbre of the track. Same as with Bonkers. Holiday was absolute crap though. urgh! Trashy - Thought you may like it. I think I may start a new thing where if the artist i am doing has dueted with robbie put an extra link up for trashy I have some good stuff picked out for the next few weeks heheh *rubs hands together*
