For a good few years now (and I think there's an ancient thread discussing this), I had pretty much wiped my hands with modern horror cinema. Witless, teen based horrors. Redundant remakes. Pointless Western takes on Japanese films. Even the B-movies, once a particular haven for me, were now stupid, "ha ha, this is shit and so we don't care" Sy Fy monster movies that had none of the imagination or flair to even be labelled alongside genuinely great low budget features. Horror sucked.
Recently, though, horror has been capturing my imagination more and more, and it's because there seems to be a glut of new ideas actually being taken on board in mainstream horror, and the reliance on pop culture, stingless boogie-men, rock soundtracks and flavour of the month teen stars (think: Halloween Resurrection, featuring Michael Myers - again, this time being beaten up by Busta fucking Rhymes). All of that nonsense has been canned for a good few movies now, where tension, suspense and most importantly great scares all come part of the package.
Insidious, Paranormal Activity and most recently Sinister (tonight, in fact. Thank YOU, Netflix!) absolutely rocked my world. Fucking LOVED them. REC was great, The Devil Inside had some superb moments and a few upcoming or just released films are all on my must see list. Compare this to a few years ago when I had zero interest in anything frightening.. because nothing was.
It's a good place to be.
