So this week I am going to do a novelty hit. A nolvelty hit is a funny thing ususally they are played to death and you quite happily never hear them again for the rest of eternity. However let me fill you in on a bit of backstory.
Novelty hits have been with us throughout time;
Nellie the Elephant (Mandy Miller, 1956)
Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka-dot Bikini (Brian Hyland, 1960)
Wombling Song (“The Wombles of Wimbledon Common) (The Wombles, 1973)
Shaddap You Face (Joe Dolce Music Theatre, 1981)
Macarena (Los Del Rio, 1994)
F.U.R.B (Frankie, 2004)
Harlem Shake (This year)
Before you slam me for Frankie, I didn't say all novelty songs were good. Far from it. They are also not just made by novelty artists either. Oh No legit artists, bands and legends have even gotten in on the act to make a quick buck. The Beatles did Yellow Submarine, The Who did Pinball Wizard (don't argue It IS a novelty song), The Jackson 5 did Rockin' Robin, Queen did Fat Bottomed Girls, Bowie & Jagger did Dancin In the Street & Even Blur did Country House.
So as you can see The "Novelty hit" has been integral to chart history.
However once every so often comes a novelty hit which you DON'T make you want to cut off your ears with a rusty razor and are even quite enjoyable years later. Schools out by Alice Cooper, Tiger Feet by Mud, Flat Beat By Mr Oizo, Suicide Is Painless By MASH or a more recent hit which I guarantee will stand the test of time and that is Gangnam style. I for one am still not sick of it and I don't think in 10 years time it will be forgotten.
This next song is one I have picked and I still love it, it still makes me laugh and is the prime example of a novelty song. It came from TV and features cartoon charaters, It got to UK number 1, It is vulgar and has an easy to sing-a-long too chorus and came out around xmas.
Gentlemen I give you THE CHEF
