Recent, high profile TV flops

It's a common opinion that we're currently enjoying something of a golden age of television. For every reality show piece of shit or talent show, there are countless high quality drama's on the next channel, and the ease and accessibility of viewing these shows is really something else. Boxsets on demand on your television set? Download the episode you missed on your tablet? Crazy.

Anyway, with such a high volume of great TV shows on your planner it's safe to say that we really are spoiled these days, and it could be damaging for some potentially great shows that take time to get going but just don't get the chance in our new cut-throat, "if you're not great straight away then you're done" culture.

But hey, that's the world we live in, and I have to admit of having very little patience for new shows that just don't grab me. So what new TV shows just didn't cut it with you and ended up being forgotten after just a few episodes?

Three new shows come to mind straight away for me.

The Following


Given the guy responsible for this show was also behind Scream, Dawson's Creak and I Know What You Did Last Summer, I shouldn't have been surprised with what The Following turned out to be; glossy, high profile fluff with an intriguing premise that quickly turns idiotic. The guy's got form. The cult leader guy wasn't nearly interesting enough, Kevin Bacon was wasted in the role of boring, sorry, "tortured" detective and the whole thing got super stupid super fast. I binned this after the third episode.

Touch


Oh, man. This fucking show. "Touch", also known as "Jaaake. Jaaaaaaake. JAAAAAAAAAAAKE" which seemed to sum up 90% of the dialogue. Kiefer Sutherland's next project after 24 was given 2.5 episodes before I left the room.

Revolution


I really wanted to like this. I really did. But the interesting concept aside, nothing remarkable, memorable or even likeable was on the episodes I forced myself through. It left me, quite fittingly, hitting the "off" button.

So that's three of my picks of big-time TV shows that just left me cold. What are some of your bigger recent TV disappointments?

With the talent and concept behind Revolution, it should have been amazing, but what the hell were they thinking? People are already bashing Agents of SHIELD for pretty much not being just like the Marvel films, but it's only 3 episodes in and pretty good so far. It's just not the blockbuster epic every week people were somehow expecting so the film tie-ins aren't really helping it out much. I'm skipping out o so many shows at this point; I just don't have room for any more.

So this is a perfect topic. I haven't seen the following but the other two you have bang to rights. See I have quite a busy schedule as it is these days with my final year of university and the sheer amount of work I have to do concerning it. TV has got to take a back seat. While watching both "touch" and "Revolution" things happened that never usually happens with me. If am watching it by episode 5, it usually means I will stick with it in one form or another.
Touch. First off, I really like Kiefer Sutherland as an actor. Not just for 24 either, so I went in with high hopes despite it being by Tim Kring the guy who single handedly shat all over Heroes POST season one. Another show that this happened with oddly enough. Touch had me down with the whole numbers thing. I love stuff like that. Despite how clichéd and overused it is nowadays, I always seem to be drawn into things like that with a "greater meaning" behind it - don't get me started on the latest stream of disappointments starting with Under the Dome. Touch was slow, VERY slow. I gave it until 4 episodes into Season Two. I stuck with it and I stuck with it. Sweet lord. I just kept waiting for it to change and of course it never did. By the end of it I couldn't give a rats ass what happened to JAKEEEE! or heck even Jack Bauer. His bad parenting and stupid decisions made it an easy option for the ol' delete button on my Sky Remote. I just felt like nothing he did was logical and made any sense. Every conclusion he came up with left me screaming "what? HOW? WHY?!" Almost as if the story was forcing us to think a certain plot line would pan out.
Revolution. Well, I used to be a big fan of Abrams. I used to be able to say I liked every single thing that I had seen where he had had input on. Armageddon. Lost. Star Trek. Cloverfield. Things have changed. This show was a nail in a coffin. Sure he has done some amazing things. But that formula of "the mystery box" he uses is limiting and now frustratingly old. He is under the impression that we never truly need to know what exactly is going on any of the time. I think Lex "Kevin Spacey" Luther said it best "...WRONG!" Revolution was filled to the brim with bad acting and god awful characters. I felt minimally sad *minor spoiler* at a not really important death somewhere in the middle of the series. *end minor spoiler* The lead actress was just infuriating. Every time she appeared on the screen I felt the need to distract myself. 6 episodes in (one more than usual atleast) I couldn't fathom wasting another hour of my life on it when there are so many better things I could be doing. Watching repeats of Friends on comedy central ranks higher. J.J - you have let the team down, you had an alright concept, it could of gone somewhere magnificent and showing me this has left me in the position where I can look back not so jaded with all the hype and see where things could have been so much better.
I know I said I wasn't gonna talk about it, but god damn it, it's relevant. UNDER THE DOME. *spoiler alert* If you haven't watched it and plan to or you haven't caught up. Avert your eyes. Kiefer may have made stupid, rash judgements in Touch but nothing compares to the people of Chesters Mill. The formula for this show is that while there stuck under a giant dome that no body knows what it is or why it's there (simpsons had this shit down and much more entertaining) -que Kai being interested- and every week something NEW and DEVASTATING happens. Little to NO, infact NO character building or progression. I know very little about 90 percent of the cast. I can't think of ONE choice that anyone has made in that stupid town that makes the least bit of sense. They're trapped. They're desperate. They may always be there. The government aren't going to help. BUT THE TOWN WILL SURVIVE. We get it. Can we have some sort of secondary plot device. Oh sure lets make all of the town stark raving lunatics with a god complex. Ok. How does that pan out. Abysmal. I can't feel anything for a single character. Which for me is the MOST important part of the show. Admittedly last week, there were no stupid choices however that's because there wasn't any choices at all really just one of those devistating things where everyone sits back and watches and nothing can be done. It left us with a bit more into what the dome may actually be I guess. So im clinched for a little longer. If it dips again, farewell. I have How I Met Your Mother to watch.
