After a prolonged silence, The Wolf is back. As I have pointed out in several various threads, I am a fan of the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre and it's much aligned sequel Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2. This is most likely due to two different factors. The first was that my father (the subject of another long ago thread) was busy watching it yet again at the drive-in (he had been attending each day since it began the run during that week)when he was called away to witness my birth. Ah, but if that was the seed then the water which caused it to grow and take root was surely from the local video rental store, aptly named Video Mart, which had this magnificent bastard glaring out the window at passers-by for almost 2 years:
I was transfixed, and scared. It so overwhelmed my thoughts that it caused me to draw my own version of it on the sidewalk during a summer children's group activity day outside(wonder what they thought?). My only prior experience to anything TCM was a brief glimpse of the original a few years earlier when I went over to visit my uncle and he paused it as the close up of the spiders in the corner happened, not wanting to subject me to the experience of what would come relatively soon in the movie. My cousin's father, a different uncle, would be the one to allow the sunlight to make it grow and take deeper root. He was anxious to watch it during the first cable run it had, so he decided we could watch the parts that did not have too much violence. Once it was clear the violence would happen, we would then be told to turn and face the wall. No violence passed our eyes but we were subject to the horrors of the screaming. Yeah.
Well, after I got to view it many times myself over the years and became a TCM fan (subjecting myself to the horrors of the following sequels and remakequels), I eventually got around to looking for the soundtrack...etched heavily into memory from the first cable run "viewing" but long out of print. I found a copy last year that was playable, still in good condition and not costing a fortune. Then while searching again two weeks ago (I am sad to admit that collectors are like this, looking for the same item several times, I came across this listing at discogs.com from a seller in Greece who had the following as his description of the LP:
The cover has a 'hype' sticker on upper right corner saying: "For you blood thirsty Zombies old and new tracks from The LORDS OF THE NEW CHURCH, THE CRAMPS, TIMBUK 3 [...]" and goes on with other artists featured. This is a unique copy, since it includes 2 rare original color photos from the film, measuring 17.50 x 12.50 cm. (approx. 7 x 5 inches), that were given to me by the film company's press office when the film was released. Also included is the original I.R.S. label inner sleeve.
Upon receiving it yesterday, I was actually shocked to find that they were REAL photos (and not reprints). Better still, they looked quite well for their age. I also realized that given the composition of the photos, it most likely they were actually taken by a photographer on set. Admittedly, although a fan, I am not an expert so I can only go as far to say they are real photos with the "This Paper Manufactured By Kodak" label multiple times on the back. Here they are (though the scans still do NOT do them justice):
