So keeping with the theme of Rock legends and all that and also in respect for the Hero that is Lou Reed I have picked the below song.
This cover of his masterpiece "perfect day" was covered for children in need or red nose day or some other self gratifying bullshit telethon day.
Anyway this is one of my favourite songs ever but not because of this version. I had heard this version growing up and thought it was ok a bit boring, loads of old boring bastards singing a slow boring song (i was 15)Fast-forward 15 years later after listening the fuck out of the transformer album I gave this cover a few listens and actually find it is not half bad.
It says something when years later listening to the original version on the transformer album I found myself singing "REEEEEP REEEEP REEEEP IM GOING TO REEEEEEEEEEEEEEP JUST WHAT YOU SOW" in Heather smalls cretinous voice but that is why I think this cover works so well. It is catchy and memorable. Not boring and sung by legends not old boring bastards (well maybe tom jones is the exception)
Even the line up of celebrities is not too bad. Normally you get any old non-enitity of the time to do these things but this has Bowie, Elton, Bono, Shane McGowen, Huey Morgan, Evan Dando, Brett Anderson and of course Big Lou himself. Dont get me wrong there is still Boyzone, Heather Small (m-people), Ian Brodie (lightning seeds) & Gabrielle. But for the most part is legit artists taking part in it.
I like the contrast to the original and the arrangement is very grand and lifts the song to another level.
Anyway enjoy.
Oh and RIP Lou Reed. I cried a little when I heard and will always regret not being able to see you live. What an absolute legend keeping it cool and original with tracks like tranquilise right to the end.
