Over the years in the Fortress, Beyonce has remained someone who hasn't received much attention. Hella nice to look at, of course, and she undeniably has a nice singing voice but.. y'know. So what? So she surprise released a new album this last week, with no hype or build up, and it's full of, oooh, "edgier material." Still, though.. so what? So, congratualtions, Mrs Z. You've got your very own thread dedicated to you. But why IS that, exactly? Oh, because her latest song, XO, contains a sample. Of what, you may ask. Prince? Bowie? Dylan? Na. Remember, this is EDGY, yo. It's a sample of dialogue, on an otherwise standard love pop song, from the doomed crew on the Passenger space shuttle that exploded in 1986 killing everyone on board. nasawatch.com/archives/2013/12/beyonce-samplin.html'cos nothing says "love song" like 7 people blowing up.

They used audio from the reports of dropping the bomb on Hiroshima in a Godzilla trailer, and I'm pretty sure more than 7 people died there. I was watching that day and remember the stark shock of it, but this is an overreaction. Multiple bands have sampled and referenced the live-television suicide of Bud Dwyer (including massive hit, "Hey Man, Nice Shot"), and that dude shot himself in the mouth at a fucking press conference to attest to his innocence after being framed for political corruption, which is an even more unpleasant and disturbing experience for everyone who saw it and for his family. But since that shit got swept under the rug and The Challenger has seen 9-11 levels of media pity porn, that tragedy in particular is untouchable? Bitch, please.

I guess, but there's surely a difference between using samples of something to make a statement (the Manic's using a clip from an interview with the mother of one of Peter Sutcliffe's victims) was a perfect intro to the brutal "Archives of Pain". Godzilla using a sample of dialogue of Hiroshima makes perfect sense and makes it more than just another dumb monster movie.
But this? It's groundless and pointless. Hell, even if the song was about losing a loved one or something that might justify it, but it just screams "let's be controversial and try and get people talking."
Admittedly, that worked.

Maybe. I haven't heard the song and this low level of controversy is not enough to make me seek to change that fact so I won't bother trying to judge the artistry of its usage. But as I'll get into in a future post, when you are a big pop star pandering to the mainstream, you can't get away with what real artists do.

Wow, that's actually a very good point. The song is OK, actually, nothing special, and there's really no justification for the clip being there.
Look forward to reading that post.

It is essentially pop-fluff (it even has a dance routine) so there is no place for this sample in this song.
I have no problem using media samples but not when it is quite literally a media ploy for column inches.
