www.toplessrobot.com/2013/12/andy_serkis_to_direct_mo-cap_animal_farm_remakeseq.phpFOX News is going to fucking FLIP when somebody tells them. And somebody is going to have to tell them because they almost certainly have not read Orwell. The original story is both ant-capitalist and anti-communist and is more of an anti-government parable, but since the relevant topic of the day was the rise of the USSR, that's the focus of the allegory. But the fact remains that most of the things in that book are as relevant to modern America now as they were to the Soviets back then. History is cyclical, after all. What I'm worried about is the tone of this thing. If it's too grim, nobody is going to like it (except maybe me), but god help them if they turn it into some kind of Pixar-esque kiddie flick complete with mentally challenged wisecracking sidekick.

Animal Farm, along with 1984, is a book I've always wanted to read but just never have. I know enough about it (2 legs baaad and all that) but just never sat down and picked up a copy.
When you click on the actual link, it gives you a synopsis of this new film.
A film for all the family. "We will tell Orwellʼs classic tale as a vibrant engaging story for 21st Century families. Just imagine Orwell writing today... seeing the entire story from the point of view of an adorable knee-high piglet...
A rite of passage for this once naïve, baby-face piglet Lucky, son of Napoleon, as he witnesses the rise and fallof a dream: a perfect existence without human beings. A modern commentary of the perils of corporate greed, but with all the innocence, joy and sensitivity of a fairy-tale.
Just great fun, anarchic, contemporary, quick-witted and very funny ... but also fearful, whereby jeopardy is in the unseen implied violence; raucous, thrilling with big set pieces; but also subtle - with incisive subversion and satire; heartbreakingly honest, accepting of sadness and emotionally ebullient". Andy Serkis
If we're talking about a standard kids movie? Whatever. If we're talking about Orwell's classic work? Sounds trite and watered down. We're actually talking about a sequel, from the eyes of the son of the lead character.
In short - it sounds fucking dreadful.

Uuuuugh. Innocence? Joy? Sensifuckingtivity? ORWELL?! have they not fucking read Orwell? We're talking about an author who had one of his heroes tortured by putting his head in a cage with hungry rats trying to eat his face. Characters in Animal Farm were torn to pieces by dogs. Sensitivity was not his thing. Stark and brutal reality told through a fictional lens was his thing.
You can maybe skip Animal Farm since it's a better political allegory than any sort of groundbreaking storytelling (although it has an amazing ending), but no intelligent human being should go through life having not read 1984. After I finally got around to reading it last year I felt stupid for having put it off for so long.
Anyway, good find on that link. I totally missed that. I skipped out on the original adaptation because I just can't picture that story making a great film due to the fact that it's about talking animals which is really hard to pull off with seriousness and making it lighthearted would miss the entire point. Looks like I'll be giving this one a pass too.
