I really only have one friend who I can talk music with (due to taste and degree of exposure to non-radio bands), and we agree on just about everything. However, the other day we got to talking about women in rock, and more specifically, female lead singers. I've always been intrigued by rock and metal bands who can do their thing without a dude belting out the vocals, but my buddy was adamant that having a chick as a singer in a rock band is a total gimmick.
My initial reaction was to argue, but then I got to thinking... how long does it take me to find a female fronted band I enjoy? How many shitty ones do I have to sort through before I find a good one? For every such band that I like, there has to be 5-10 that are boring or derivative as hell. But aren't most modern rock bands boring or derivative as hell regardless of who their members are?
What do you think? Women in rock- good? Bad? Fun? Gimmick?

Bro, do you even Arch Enemy? Your buddy's going to have a hard time convincing me that Otep, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, Walls of Jericho, Runaways, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Heart, Plasmatics, Epica, and any number of other female-fronted bands whose music fills my life with joy are all just gimmick acts.

TCM said it right there. He's already fighting a loosing battle. I mean is your buddy affiliated with anti-feminist groups or something? I mean if it IS a gimmick it's an awfully long one that has spanned decades and it certainly doesn't work most of the time. The fact that there is more bands fronted by men out their that you enjoy or that you rate as good is just down to personal preference. Every single mention there by TCM kinda makes me want to do nothing but listen to female rock bands for the rest of week.

I'm on a Holyhell and Eyes Set to Kill kick at the moment myself, and I have more than a few female fronted bands in my repertoire, but our discussion wasn't "Dude, chicks can't do metal." It was more like... what's the best way for a shitty rock band to get attention without improving the quality of their music? Have a frontwoman. I'm not sure I agree, but I can think of a few bands off the top of my head that are exactly that- shitty acts who can't write music but have hot female lead singers. I also love when Trashcanman gets angry, which is why I made the thread.

Happy now? I don't know about having a frontwoman getting you too much attention. Although there are plenty of women who rock socks, it's still mostly a man's world. The ladies don't necessarily sell as well on the whole as the Nickelbacks and Creeds of the world and there's still a lot of people that will dismiss them offhand based entirely on gender. A lot of people say that Heart only got into the Hall of Fame because two of them are women, but they have a massive list of hits that absolutely everybody knows and were one of the only bands from the 70's to actually increase their success in the 80's and still be selling well in the 90's. I'd think 8 platinum or better studio albums inside of twenty years would do more for your chances than two vaginas.
